I hate to disappoint you, but these numbers involving fatalities are among the most misleading statistics you'll find anywhere. I deal professionally with similar figures involving auto accidents, and I've reached the point where I routinely dismiss fatality rates as completely irrelevant to my work.

The problem is that fatalities -- whether they involve guns, cars, or anything of that sort that could lead to death from something other than "natural causes" -- are declining for reasons that have nothing to do with the number of incidents involving guns, cars, etc. The decline of fatalities in these cases is mainly attributable to improvements in medical care, and tp the increased urbanization of this country which has resulted in more and more people living in close proximity to hospitals with state-of-the-art trauma care facilities.
