Delta Force Death in Iraq Doesn't Reflect 'Combat Role,' Carter Says

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter tried to explain Friday how a U.S. soldier could die heroically in a combat raid he personally authorized in Iraq while the nation was still not involved in "boots on the ground" combat. Carter hailed 39-year-old Delta Force Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler as an exemplary hero who "ran to the sound of the guns" in the helicopter assault Thursday with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters that freed 70 ISIS hostages. He was the first U.S. combat fatality of the campaign against ISIS. "This is combat," Carter said of the raid on an ISIS prison compound east of the town of Hawija in northern Iraq, and "we expect do to do more of this kind of thing." However, Carter said that "things are complicated" when asked if the policy against U.S. troops engaging in direct combat was still in effect. "Americans are flying combat missions, thousands of combat missions, over Syria and Iraqi territory," Carter said at a Pentagon news conference at which he rejected charges of "mission creep." "There are Americans involved in training and advising Iraqi security forces around the country," Carter said, but "we do not have combat formations there the way we had once upon a time in Iraq, or the way we have had in years past in Afghanistan." The potential for more raids of the type that freed the hostages "doesn't represent a change in our strategy but it does represent a change in our approach to achieving it," Carter said.

"In a statement Friday, Army Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, head of Committed Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, said, "U.S. forces are not in Iraq on a combat mission and do not have 'boots on the ground.'"

Never mind Master Sergeant Wheeler's casket at Dover...

Carter is 100% political. He has no actual interest in national defense. He’ll just say whatever it takes to further his own career.

"Defense Secretary Ashton Carter tried to explain spin Friday how a U.S. soldier could die heroically in a combat raid..."

What was the true purpose of this raid? It may take some time to know the truth.

I wonder if that POS Carter still puts out milk and cookies for Santa Claus? It is just one stupid thing after another with these dip sticks.

Top military brass are wearing panties and subjected to threats by thier captors. Every move the captors take is for political puposes only and military lives do not matter and are expendable (bengahzi) When there is no deterant to these crimes committed they will continue (congressional carnival hearings that produce nothing). Some one needs to be held accountable and punished for the 4 deaths at bengahzi

I really do support a 50% cut in the federal budget, phased in at 10% a year. Waste, fraud, abuse and politics go all the way through and government is a boat anchor on what this country could actually do.

It is an insult to this fine man and all who are asked to do the dirty work for this corrupt government.

The entire force eligible for retirement should put in their paperwork tomorrow.

It doesn’t have to be THAT much. A 1% reduction a year would be simple. After five years or so, the world would be a much better place.

Either reduce benefits or don’t fill empty slots. Even a retarded manager can find 1% a year.

Where are the Sam Damons in our officer corps? Seems like they got out of the military, and all we have left are Courtney Massengales.

Sam Damon was pushed out by the Homo- Feminazis. Courtney opted for the transgender assignment and rapid promotion.

I doubt I would have been promoted to 1LT in today’s Army.
