MEXICO CITY Patricia, a storm that once carried the strongest hurricane winds ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere, is weakening rapidly as it slogs inland after strafing a lightly populated stretch of Mexicos Pacific Coast, where it toppled trees, bashed in roofs and swept away cars.
Mexicos president, Enrique Peña Nieto, struck cautiously optimistic notes in an update from a federal emergency center but warned people to stay in shelters as the storm continued to drop heavy volumes of rain and threatened to cause floods and landslides.
With the information we have, and taking into account that the phenomenon is continuing, the damages have been minor for a hurricane of this magnitude, Peña Nieto said.
Patricia, which at its peak was a massive Category 5 storm with 200-mph winds before making landfall, quickly tapered as it crossed mountainous terrain and withered into a tropical storm early Saturday.

Stay safe TX.
Getting moderate rainfall here in Corpus Christi this morning from the remnants of Patricia. May see up to 10 inches in spots today, tonight and Sunday. Been pretty dry here since our last deluge in May.
I visited a friend of mine who lived in the Beaumont/ Houston area, and he pointed out all the drainage canals everywhere. He said that area would essentially be a swamp without those. He lived in Buffalo Bayou.
“’the damages have been minor for a hurricane of this magnitude,’ Peña Nieto said. “
Global Warming Zealots Greatly Saddened!
Jerks.
Been following Joe Bastardi’s updates on Twitter. He says the storm will re-intensify when it hits the warm waters of the Gulf and is predicting tropical storm conditions along NE Texas coast by tomorrow. Then, as it moves ashore in the U.S., it will trigger a major severe weather event from lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Hope all the FReepers from Corpus up to Beaumont are taking necessary precautions.
Hardly even a drizzle in the Houston/Hobby area so far.
We’ll see soon if it tops Tropical Storm Claudette in 79.
Seems like every storm these days is advertised as the worst ever, then turn out to be quite ordinary...
I remember Claudette. That was a LOT of rain.
Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana get some jaw-dropping rainfal totals ever so often.
Tell me about it. Yesterday the global warming crowd were hysterical. They were literally in tears saying that the government needs to get involved to stop “global warming” before it’s too late and using this hurricane as an example. So glad it fizzled (relatively speaking).
I hope those warped blood dancers drown in their bitter tears.
As I remember, there was a high just north of us that kept pushing Claudette back on top of us. It seemed like it hit us three times before it finally moved on.
FYI
It’s been raining in San Antonio since yesterday . My daughter’s dental office in Austin is flooded . We really need the rain .
On Telephone Rd just north of Hobby Airport.
Local radio report this A.M. regarding this storm becoming a tropical storm sounded like John Bohner reporting; the man was virtually weeping at the loss of hurricane status.
I have been watching this weather pretty closely and I don’t remember hearing anyone say this low was going to become a tropical storm. The low pressure system has been lurking around the western Gulf for several days. The front coming down from the north west was going to sweep up the weak low pressure and then the moisture from Patricia was going to join to make a huge rain event.
I had a 68 Chevy PU. I had sealed the ignition with silicone grease. I was able to drive thru flood waters so high that water burbled up onto the hood. I would keep the rpm’s up slipping the clutch the whole time to keep the water out of the exhaust. Water filled the cab up to the top of the hump.
