One member of a US special operations team was killed during an operation to rescue hostages held by Islamic State militants in northern Iraq, the first American killed in ground combat with the militant group, US officials said on Thursday.

Hostages were successfully rescued during the operation, a US official told Reuters. CNN said about 70 Kurdish hostages were freed.

A US official confirmed to Reuters that one American was killed. No further information was available on the mission, which local residents and a Kurdish military commander said was carried out in the Hawija area in northern Iraq.

Am glad that the hostages were freed, regretful that one American serviceman was killed - but wish that the article had mentioned how many "unfriendlies" were "put down" during the operation.

Regards,

US soldiers helping the Kurds? Surprise? Not! They are the only ones worth helping.

We used to own that country, and now we have to sneak in, and risk American lives there.

One has to wonder:

Who was rescued?

Why were they rescued?

Why now?

Is this an attempt to provide relief to the beleaguered Kurds? Better late than never, I guess.

We probably rescued some ISIS dudes who had gotten captured by Russians or someone else.

That can’t be ruled out, under a Pentagon which does things like discharge Special Forces sergeants who take action to halt ongoing war crimes.

A new president will need to conduct some purging of careerists and recall of honorable officers and NCOs. This thing which has evolved under the direction of Obama and neocons cannot be trusted at home or abroad.

RE: Who was rescued?

IT’s IN THE ARTICLE:

“NBC News, citing unidentified sources, said the operation was requested by the Iraqi government and those rescued were Kurdish fighters. It said the US forces suffered casualties but the number of injuries was unclear.”

The New York Times reports that during the operation Kurdish forces took the lead while US Special Forces, helicopters, and airstrikes provided support.

The Times, citing unidentified Iraqi sources, said that the raid also resulted in the capture of several senior ISIS militants.

RE: Why now?

We can always ask that question, as in -— why did they kill Osama Bin Ladin at that particular time?

RE: Right. My questions remain.

You mean there’s more to the motive of the mission than reported?

Hopefully he shamed Obama into staying out of it and let the militaries work together to disintegrate ISIS.
