people I have met who want to buy some hand cannon thinking that they will be able to use that as their defensive gun.

Please define "hand cannon".

Hand cannon: Any pistol too large, heavy, or with too much recoil to be effectively used by the individual.

Some may be able to shoot a .50 Desert Eagle effectively.

Most cannot.
