Welcome to the 'RECHTSRUTSCH': The far right is quietly making massive gains in Europe
Business Insider ^ | 10/19/2015 | Mike Bird

European nationalist parties are enjoying a worrying surge of support on the back of the continent's migrant crisis, a development that has been largely overlooked.

The rise of far-right parties in Europe — like the Front National in France or Golden Dawn in Greece — has been a major story over the last few years, but recent developments have received much less attention even though their gains have been more dramatic.

In several elections in the last month, radical parties to the right of Europe's mainstream conservatives are gaining strength. Opinion polls in other countries paint the same picture.

Few people pay attention to Swiss elections, and most people can't name the country's political leaders. Since most major decisions go to referendums, either at the national or local level, there's not quite as much for legislators to do. But this weekend the populist and right-wing Swiss People's Party won 29.4% of the vote, the largest proportion ever, after a campaign that focused on migration. According to the BBC it is being referred to as a "rechtsrutsch," or a slide to the right.

The Swiss People's Party is perhaps known best internationally for its use of pretty openly racist posters.

In Austria, there's been quiet momentum behind the far-right Freedom Party too. In late September, the party nudged the mainstream centre-left party out of second place in a state elections in Upper Austria. In 2010, one of the party's slogans was "mehr mut für unser Wiener blut," or "more courage for our Viennese blood."

* Geert Wilders’ PVV is 18 points ahead of the governing VVD in the latest polls.

* Marine Le Pen’s National Front leads in most polls in France.

* In Italy, Matteo Salvini’s Northern League is riding high.

Sanity rolls in like a tidal wave every where but the Republican Party.

In the Leftists’ zeal to push the pendulum as hard as they can, they have forgotten the basic physics of pendulums. The harder they push, the farther it will swing back when it does finally snap back.

I am tired of the term “far right.” It is only far right relative to the far left that has gone over the cliff to the left. How about “patriots trying to save their country”? That’s more accurate.

Nice characterization, labeling doing what is right to preserve freedom and decency as “far right.”

My, my. People want to retain their language, culture, and borders and that is considered to be a worrying sign. The leftist global elites want a world government that will make us all into serfs.

Trump is one of the few "politicians" in this country who has not overlooked what is happening. He has been able to tap into the frustration and anger of the American people who don't like feeling like foreigners in their own country. We are being colonized by the Third World thanks to the political and corporate elites. We need a nationalist party in this country.

Nationalist pride is evil to the left (hence the “far right” epithets).

Will something similar happen here?

The left is always trying to turn the US into Europe. So why not?

What is too far? This is BS, Hitler was a socialist pig, just like many U.S. Politicians such as Hillary and Sanders. Worse yet, BO is a black Muslim Marxist.

“European nationalist parties are enjoying a worrying surge “

Dear Mike,

You can do the worrying for both of us,
as I think what’s happening is a natural
and heartening reaction to being invaded.

Oh, and it’d be helpful if you’d stick
to reporting on Insider Business things,
and not so much declaiming on the reaction
of others to world events.

Tks.

I agree about the socialism. I’m referring to the nationalism.

Healthy nationalism - patriotism - is a good thing. But as we saw 33-45 it is possible to take it too far.

The rise of far-right parties in Europe....

I'm still waiting for the day, year, century, whatever, where I read the words "far left" in an MSM publication.

I’ve never been to a more civilized country than Switzerland. Limited Government, a social, moral, educated and responsible people. A highly developed economy and universal respect for privacy, human rights, and property.

When the US MSM is portraying even the Swiss as frothing racists because some are not on board with Merkel’s agenda - you know you can not longer trust a word the American media has to say.

I just hope the pendulum doesnt swing too far this time.

Why not? Is there fear that it may swing all the way over to the Leftist Socialist Nazi Party again?

History repeats itself. Every generation has to relearn the mistakes of their elders. There’s a natural cycle to the way things behave.
