MSNBC's Alter Suggests Bush to Blame for Not Preventing 9/11 Attacks

Appearing as a panel member on Sunday's Up show on MSNBC, Bloomberg View columnist and MSNBC political analyst Jonathan Alter hinted that President Bush deserved blame for not stopping the 9/11 attacks as he recounted a vague warning from August 2001 that Osama bin Laden wanted to attack the U.S. He further accused the "Bush people" of "Orwellian, deceptive, historically amnesiatic (sic) thinking."

Host Richard Wolffe picked up on recent comments by Donald Trump similarly seeming to blame President Bush. After playing a clip from a Trump interview with Bloomberg's Stephanie Ruhle, and then recounting GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush's Twitter response, the MSNBC host wondered if "we are actually witnessing the end of 9/11 politics" as he turned to Alter and posed: -

as he turned to Alter and posed:

In a campaign year where outsiders are in the lead, and the usual rules of engagement don’t seem to apply, does this mean that one of the golden rules of politics over the last 15 years is now obsolete? Are we actually witnessing the end of 9/11 politics? I’m going to turn to my panel here. Jon, 9/11 politics has been with us very powerfully for a long time here. Is it open season on the kinds of things Republicans campaigned successfully on before?

The MSNBC political analyst went after President Bush as he began:

Well, I hope it is, and this is one of Donald Trump’s great contributions to this campaign, whatever else he’s doing that we all object to. He is calling out the Bush people for Orwellian, deceptive, historically amnesiatic (sic) thinking, right? For Jeb Bush to say, “My brother kept us safe,” is not true, you know. Facts are stubborn things, as other politicians have reminded us.

Donald’s making this statement about Bush’s responsibility for 9/11, may have been done to increase Trump’s
appeal to democrats or birther-conservatives.

I still have to wonder about the 20 something pages that were suppressed on the 9/11 report.

You would thin 14 years later we could see ‘em....

I think personally between all the damage that the Clinton’s did to our intelligence agencies and bush rebuilding it, it was going to look bad for bush anyway you slice it.

Can’t believe this crap here. The intelligence was this specific:

Osama Bin Laden wants to attack America using planes.

Are you the genius who can extrapolate from that to what happened on 9/11.

There is a world of difference in blaming Bush for 9-11 and saying that statement that “Bush kept us safe” is factually inaccurate in light of the 9-11 attack.

The libs are still upset Gore lost in 2000.

They figure if Gore had won, we’d all be dead by now, instead of just holding onto America by a slender thread.

That’s the way they think, deep down. Their self-loathing masks a desire for national suicide.

Exactly.

Trump was also pointing out that he wouldn’t allow Arabs into this country to commit these attacks. Who could be against that?

Bush never tried to defend himself against even the worst libels and as a result he lost the narrative on Iraq before and after and made it easier for Obama to be elected.

Safest bet is that classified info will remain classified. The time to conceal it will be extended for another decade or two.
There are still classified papers from JFK’s assasination and the trial that almost followed under lock and key. Many of these papers were set to become available for public viewing in a few years. Not anymore with that time extended.

Somewhat off topic, but no one seems to be mentioning on any of these threads that Bill Clinton was also responsible for letting Osama bin Laden loose. I forget the details, but he certainly let a known terrorist loose, who threatened to attack us.

How many terrorist attacks were there in the US after 9/11? Name one if you can.

Alter is an imbecile. Bush had been president for only 8 months before the attacks. Clinton was the one who could of apprehended Osama bin Laden when Sudan disclosed his whereabouts to the State Department. Typical liberals making revisionist history again. Trump should know better as well but I think he is doing it on purpose to annoy Jeb Bush.

Or maybe Saudi government complicity is mentioned in it. Can’t have that with our freedom loving allies, the Sauds.

The “Orwellian, deceptive, historically amnesiatic (sic) thinking,” is Mr Alter’s as he would have violently opposed enforcing visa limits or tearing down Gorelick’s intelligence ‘wall’.

As president Bush gets credit or blame but what was in place when he got there- and caused the failure- was the fault of the likes of Alter.
