The suit was filed Thursday on behalf of about 2,000 teachers by Rafe Esquith, 61, one of the Los Angeles Unified School District's best-known and most popular teachers.

2003 National Medal of the Arts. a Walt Disney American Teacher Award as Oustanding Teacher of the Year. a Parents Magazine "As You Grow" award. and an Oprah Winfrey $100,000 "Use Your Life" award.

He's also been made an honorary member of the Order of the British Empire.

Esquith and the Hobart Shakespeareans gained widespread renown several years ago after PBS aired a documentary about them. In 2012 they were featured at the annual TED Conference

It comes on the heels of reports that the L.A. school board voted unanimously and behind closed doors to fire Esquith for misconduct. Earlier this year, Esquith was pulled from his classroom and placed under investigation.

Talking about nudity in class

• Keeping sexual material on his school computer

first one, kind of vague.

second one, what is sexual material? could be a Victoria’s secret website.

i dont think we can decide until they release more evidence.

Oh, absolutely he was hunted down and fired. Someone likely very much enjoyed taking down such a ‘pillar’ of local education.

But the entire premise of the lawsuit is insane; LAUSD has not the slightest care in the world for how much the taxpayers are on the hook for lifetime pensions and health care. They’d no more extend such an effort than they’d contemplating killing their own enormous administrative benefits package.

That many teachers have had such vindictive actions taken against them is hardly shocking - if you didn’t bow to the union bosses, stomp outside on cue for every workplace grievance, and follow in lockstep on the union political beliefs, you will be shut out, even if it takes thirty years to do it.

Honestly, I’m surprised the CNN author was able to complete the story instead of laughing themselves silly at the mere concept that LAUSD would fire teachers to avoid paying benefits. I don’t think the class action suit will get very far.

Good point!

I'm thinking the bucket of crabs effect.

When a single crab is put into a lidless bucket, they surely can and will escape. However, when more than one share a bucket, none can get out. If one crab elevates themself above all, the others will grab this crab and drag'em back down to share the mutual fate of the rest of the group.

It took him 30 years to realize he was working for a criminal enterprise?

Hmm...I’d like to see the Unions have to pay the judged amount.

According to the article, the class was studying Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn.” Whose decision was it to study Finn in 5th grade? When I was in school, that waited until I was, IIRC, a sophomore in high school.

As for sexual material, it is pretty dumb for any employee to look at anything the least bit provocative on an employer’s computer. When using an employer’s computer, I try to never even click on a link I’m not pretty darn sure is “work safe”, even if I’m doing research for my employer. Granted, that these days, one can unsuspectingly click a link and who knows what is in the sidebar (etc.) of the page that comes up, if one doesn’t have software active to block such. Shoot, a lot of the news links on FR lead to pages with pretty racy stuff somewhere on them.

Still, you are right, the release of much “better” evidence is needed...

I certainly read ‘Tom Sawyer’ in fifth or sixth grade and in high school ‘Huckleberry Finn’.

I went to Parochial schools and a serious Catholic Men’s Prep School. We read the classics, particularly American classics and we did at least one book every 2 weeks.

We read , among others, Berger with either ‘Little Big Man’ or ‘Neighbors’ your choice. I read ‘Little Big Man for class. We read Heller’s ‘Catch 22’, ‘Slaughterhouse-five’, as well as Vonnegut’s ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’ for it’s short stories. So many quality books that it is hard to remember them all. We where required to read at least a couple dozen a year. Of course many where interminable .

I was reading Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn to my son when he was six or seven I suppose. I did explain how the book was written awhile ago and that the term nigger wasn't used or polite anymore. I can't remember what word we used instead.

Other than the derogatory term, the book was a great example of honor and friendship no matter what color one’s skin is. (AND a great adventure!)

I went to a prep school and studied “Tom Sawyer” in middle school. “Huckleberry Finn” was either 8th or 9th grade.

“Whose decision was it to study Finn in 5th grade?”

We read “Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn” in fifth grade. I spent eight months of 5th grade in the hospital and that reading was some of the classwork sent to me from school.

Socialist subject (serf, prole, etc.) of the British crown. That should be grounds
alone for expulsion. Just another liberal teaching good ol
European socialism.

Maybe, but the local kommisars do care and the ones in charge. The laughing is about finding a judge who would shut them down and kill their cash cow!
