They took his gun to run the ballistics. Have to make sure, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the bullet that killed the bad guy came from the good guy’s gun.
Even with a clear-cut suicide, they take the gun and run it. Dotting the Is and crossing the Ts.

I would suspect they took his side arm as part of the investigation. Ballistics tests to confirm it was the gun that fired the shot. Police have to substantiate cause of death and refer to DA.
