Two Niagara Regional Police officers were wounded Saturday night during an incident near Welland.
According to police, one officer was shot three times and the second officer was shot once in the foot during a standoff, CTV News reported on its website late Saturday.
Niagara Regional Police say one of the officers is undergoing surgery while the second was shot in the foot, The Canadian Press reported.
Police say the officers’ injuries are not considered life threatening
Niagara Regional Police Chief Jeff McGuire thanked the community on Twitter and said their thoughts and prayers are with the officers and their families as the forces “deals with” the officers injured near Welland, located within the Regional Municipality of Niagara, southwest of Niagara Falls.
Police say the officers were responding to a report of an attempted suicide in the community of Fenwick early Saturday evening.
Police say another person was wounded but police can’t give any further details because Ontario's police watchdog is investigating.
The Special Investigations Unit is automatically called in when someone is injured or killed as a result of police action.
