It's the second most abundant substance in the universe. It dissolves more materials than any other solvent. It stores incredible amounts of energy. Life as we know it would not be possible without it. And although it covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface, many parts of the world are in dire straits for lack of it. What is it?
The answer, of course, is water. In some ways, water is one of the substances we know best, in part because it makes up 75% of our bodies. Every day we drink it, bathe in it, clean with it and use it to dispose of our wastes. Yet scientists are still striving to understand many of water's remarkable properties, and the 21st century will force us to think about water like we never have before.
[last paragraph]A saying often misattributed to Albert Einstein claims there are two ways to lead a life. The first is as though nothing is a miracle, and the second is as though everything is a miracle. Water is entirely natural, hugely abundant and so necessary to life that our cells are bathed in it. Yet it is also so remarkable that, as a physician and scientist, I regard it as little short of miraculous.

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Here you go, Mr. Gunderman--you can now with upmost confidence say miraculous.
Ah, the wonder of H2O and found on other planets (or so they say today). The miracle of life?
In some countries, all at the same time.
The second most abundant substance in the universe is helium.
We don’t see the simple truths. Imagine a void, then fill it with stuff. What are the odds that random stuff would have within its design the capacity to bring forth consciousness? Which is more difficult to believe? A designer? Or the odds of random stuff waking up?
While Helium is the second most abundant Element in the universe, I believe the author was speaking of things more complex that single element molecules.
Roger, water may the be miracle of life and was not saying how life started. Science has its limitations and how or when life started is one of them. All we have is theories.
Life is a miraculous thing that Science does not really understand and probably never will... Much less how it started!
Kind of like the universe and how in the world can we even understand never ending (infinite)...and so much more...speed of light, black holes, and even these we really know nothing about (we guess) because we can’t experience them, only guess within known science. The miracle of life will probably be the last understanding by man.
BTW, the physical and chemical properties of water and its abundance are some of the strongest proofs of the Creator God, at least for anyone who has some knowledge of chemistry, physics, logic and probability.
And a smidgen of intellectual honesty!
“While Helium is the second most abundant Element in the universe, I believe the author was speaking of things more complex that single element molecules.”
I realize that and if he had said “molecule” I would not have disputed it, however he specifically said substance.
The angle of the hydrogen atoms relative to the oxygen is 104 degrees and 40 minutes. If it was slightly greater or less, life on this planet could not exist. See, that angle makes water a polar molecule, which gives it many of its physical characteristics, including the fact that frozen water is actually less dense than the liquid. If that wasn’t true, then when lakes and seas froze, they would freeze from the bottom up and all the marine life would die. Since single-cell marine life is the first link in the food chain, nothing higher up could survive either.
Now tell me there’s no God.
it is not beyond reality to consider a totally different life basis than water. that would be a methane based life form
You have barely scratched the surface of the complexity required to support life.
Water is the largest contributor to global warming.
True but unlikely at least according to our knowledge today.
What sets the angle...?
I thought it was bullshit.
Dihydrogenmonoxide is a solvent that permeates everything we eat and drink!
It is even in Baby Food!
The clouds contain vast amounts of this solvent and threatens to dump more of it upon Gaia any second without warning!
Our bodies are full of it, and people are addicted to it so badly that without it they will DIE!
Even a small amount of in the lungs can cause immediate DEATH!
BAN DIHYDROGENMONOXIDE NOW!!!!!!!
No water, no life, it truly is a blessed substance.
