Ok, but has any non-House member ever been in the job?
I’ll bet that neither the Republican HQ’s or Democratic HQ’s would dare allow a non-house guy to serve in the job. Personally, this might be a better job for Doc Carson.

Nothing says there can’t be a co-Speaker.
I nominate Allen West and Sarah Palin as a Co-Speaker Team.
The job has gotten to the point where one person is inadequate to the task.
West and Palin could divide gavel duties, public speaking, building the conservative caucus, and working floor votes,etc.
They would make a dynamic power team.
