Four Russian warships in the Caspian Sea have launched 26 rockets at Islamic State in Syria, Russia’s defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, told president Vladimir Putin during a televised meeting.
The claim, which could not be immediately confirmed, came after a Syrian official and activists said Syrian troops backed by Russian airstrikes battled rebels in two provinces in what appeared to be the first major coordinated assault since Moscow intervened in the conflict.
Shoigu said the operation destroyed all the targets and that no strikes were lauched upon civilian areas.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a Syrian government offensive began on four fronts on Wednesday morning in the north-western provinces of Idlib and neighbouring Hama. Its director, Rami Abdurrahman, described it as “the most intense fighting in months”. A Syrian official later confirmed the new offensive.
The latest developments come exactly a week after Russia began launching airstrikes in Syria. Moscow says it is targeting Isis and al-Qaida’s Syrian affiliate, but at least some of the strikes over the past week appear to have hit western-backed factions.

Why would Russia put warships in the Caspian Sea?
Looking at the map, it seems counterintuitive.
This attack was a message to NATO. The US is not the only navy with cruise missiles that can hit any point in the ME.
It is a big “lake” bordered by multiple countries. Each has its own territorial waters, and they need navies to defend them.
Would those vessels have limited use, being landlocked and all?
I assume they’d be mostly smaller vessels.
Or maybe they just had a bunch of missiles with their shelf life ending that needed to be shot? Doesn’t really make sense as if they were really targeting ISIS, then why not fly a sortie instead of shooting a missile from 1000 miles?

Like I said, to make a statement. That and live fire training to verify accuracy and effectiveness of the weapon system.

Its just that as a landlocked body of water, those vessels are limited in their deployment.
They will never experience the salt of the open sea. The sailors on those vessels will never get to visit exotic ports of call.
What do they get to visit and see? The dancing goats of Salyan, Azerbaijan. Wow.

The Caspian Sea fleet is landlocked but apparently their missiles are in range of Syrian targets. This is an opportunity for the crews to be “blooded” in a real war and to clean out aging stocks of missiles.
