The United States and 11 other Pacific Rim nations on Monday agreed to the largest regional trade accord in history, a potentially precedent-setting model for global commerce and worker standards that would tie together 40 percent of the worlds economy, from Canada and Chile to Japan and Australia.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership still faces months of debate in Congress and will inject a new flash point into both parties presidential contests.
But the accord a product of nearly eight years of negotiations, including five days of round-the-clock sessions here is a potentially legacy-making achievement for President Obama, and the capstone for his foreign policy pivot toward closer relations with fast-growing eastern Asia, after years of American preoccupation with the Middle East and North Africa.
Mr. Obama spent recent days contacting world leaders to seal the deal. Administration officials have repeatedly pressed their contention that the partnership would build a bulwark against Chinas economic influence, and allow the United States and its allies not Beijing to set the standards for Pacific commerce.
The Pacific accord would phase out thousands of import tariffs as well as other barriers to international trade. It also would establish uniform rules on corporations intellectual property, open the Internet even in communist Vietnam and crack down on wildlife trafficking and environmental abuses.

Prior to the income tax, the majority of our national income came from import tariffs, IIRC. This doesn’t strike me as a good thing for America.
Ted Cruz voted for this didn’t he? Sheesh
After McConnell lied to him...
The Sell Out Of American Continues!
If you believe that, I have a manufacturing plant in Vietnam to sell you. Cruz even opposed Sessions on this, and knew full well what he was doing with his vote. So-called "free trade" will only result in the final dismantling of our manufacturing. It must be opposed at all costs.
NYSlimes doing it’s level best to dress up this OWG *trade agreement* pig.
If at the end of the day Bernie Sanders ends up being the only candidate in opposition to this, then he is going to win.
We CAN NOT nominate a Chamber of Commerce RINO.
THAT was a sad day.
Good-bye Ted Cruz, his campaign will never get off the grown if this deal happens.
No he did not.
Don’t confuse TPP with TPA. TPP hasn’t been voted on yet. This NYT report is about TPP.
Congress will now get to vote on TPP after coming months of debates. It is vital that conservatives like Ted Cruz vote down this rubbish.
The only reason TPP is now coming to the forefront after failing the last 8 years is because Obama is promising bribes or has agreed to cede deals to key people.
With Boehner to be gone, Americans have a chance to vote this garbage down. Donald Trump will have something to say about it. Nothing on any trade deal should happen until after Donald Trump is sworn in.
Croney Capitalism posing as âfree tradeâ
If so, then who are you going to vote for, Jeb?
Another debacle in the making.
Because of backstabbers like Cruz, Obama can have his TPP passed with a simple majority. Screw him!
Senator Jeff Sessions and Senator Mike Lee also voted for TPA so you would call them backstabbers too.
Go away!
What the hell is the matter with you? Sessions was just one of five no votes. He did NOT vote for TPA. Don't know Mike Lee's position, but if he voted for it, he's a filthy backstabber too.
So is all media, including supposed entertainment media. Evey watch Madam Secretary? Last night’s show was propaganda for TPP/TPA (there was even a talent show put on for the other nations attending the Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership dinner where a song about the agreement was set to Billy Joel’s For the Longest Time).

Leftist propaganda, indeed. Hollyweird lefties are all in, as well.
Paid you-know-whats.
