Anxious family members of 28 Americans who went missing during Hurricane Joaquin awaited news of their loved ones' fates Saturday, as the Coast Guard combed hundreds of miles looking for their stricken cargo ship.
Officials said there was still no sign of the El Faro, which was last heard from around 7:20 a.m. ET Thursday when a distress call indicated it had lost power and was taking on water.

What was the captain thing by proceeding into a hurricane situation?
No maritime schedule is that important.
Still, sad for all.
“thing” = thinking
“The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy...”
RIP. I’ll be GREATLY surprised if they find evidence of the ship, let alone the bodies. Yikes!
(maybe a few food stamp shipping containers floating about)
You think that’s funny?
Puerto Rico was the gateway to the Caribbean, which is why the US wanted it and took it over. PR had a good GOP government a few years back that was making major changes. But then they went back to voting for a municipal-union-friendly Dem, and things haven’t recovered to this day, thanks to Barry and the gang.
PR is a giant US civil servant union-sponsored bureaucracy.

All the American models had the storm well to the west of the ship's position. Only the European model actually nailed it correctly. My guess is the captain thought the storm would be well to the west of his position.
Read an account that suggested an EPIRB beacon (assume satellite received) was received once Thursday morning.

Teporting it sank.
I heard they found a lifeboat as part of the debris. How could they not have used it? The ship was already listing when the captain called for help.
They sailed in to 140 MPH winds and lost power. That’s like 60 foot waves or better.
