Yes, but, that was when the US believed and Castro led the US to believe he was pro freedom for the people of Cuba. Castro then lined himself with the Soviet Union and the CIA spent the next thirty years trying to kill him.

If the US (and hindsight is always 20-20) had trained the millions of Cubans who have left the Island and returned them to fight and take back control of Cuba, they would be free today.
