To many observers, it may seem strange that the Vatican would choose to keep a secret of what has been called “the most significant meeting” of the Pope’s entire trip to the United States: his 15-minute encounter with Kentucky County Clerk, Kim Davis.

Because the agenda would have been compromised. Some things don’t require much thought.

If I had a private meeting with my priest, I would not like it if he were to go blabbing that we had a meeting (irrespective of whether or not I later decided to talk about it).

There is also a question of at what point does a private meeting with a priest fall under priest/penitent privilege. That she is not Catholic would mean this is not a confession; however, there is a reasonable expectation that such a meeting would fall into a category of "it is not the priest's place to broadcast it."

The pope is still a priest.

If Obama had gotten the word that Kim Davis was going to meet with the Pope, the meeting might never have happened. Don’t put past Obama to exercise his dictatorial prerogatives.

I don’t think the Pope had freedom of movement while in the USA.

With this guy, it all depends on what he said to her.

Was it a 'Way to go, girl, stand your ground! or 'Stop making waves and get with the program!'

One answer could be that Vatican officials were embarrassed about the meeting and didn’t want to make it look like the Pope was weighing in on the contentious issue of gay marriage and supporting a figure who was standing up for her religious rights against the Supreme Court, which had ruled in June that same-sex marriage was now the law of the land.

If the Pope was embarrassed about the meeting then it wouldn't have happened. Duh.

His Holiness probably met with a great many people in private while he was here. They aren't publicizing those either. It's called a "private audience" for a reason.
