Republican U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield of Kentucky says he will not seek a 12th term.
Whitfield made the announcement in a news release Tuesday afternoon. The Hopkinsville Republican has been in Congress for 20 years. His term ends in January 2017.
Whitfield was a Democratic member of the state House of Representatives in the late 1970s before switching to the Republican party to run for Congress in 1994. Whitfield said he is most proud of helping to establish a federal health benefit program for the workers of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant and creating a national forest at the Land Between The Lakes.

Another Republican liberal decides to quit. Excellent news!
12 Terms??? That’s enough, give someone else a chance in a different era.
I’m not surprised. Whitfield’s father died and his opponents accused his wife of illegally lobbying for the Humane Society.
Right now, word is that state Agriculture Commissioner James Comer is the GOP front-runner if he wants the job. I don’t know a great deal about him.
Good!
I wish every last one of them that’s been there 12 years would quit tomorrow!
Rino proud of his government programs.
Good news!!! We need em all to quit!!!
Can we invite the British to burn DC down a second time?
RW—know anything about this guy or a likely replacement?
Comer lost to Matt Bevin the Gov primary. So in other words he’s a world beater. ;d
Whitfield, class of 94.
2 terms is too much.
You misspelled eight.
That might be too long. It is far past time for term limits.
That’s no guarantee for better representation. They implemented in California for the legislature and it made things worse, since the revolving door of politicians empowered staffers and the unions (both public and private), who now hold the real power.
Whitfield was part of the class of 1994 and the first Republican to represent the district. Democrats gave up trying to win it back several terms ago and he has been winning in huge landslides. It is probably a safe GOP seat at this point but you never know. He’s pretty much your typical squishy right of center Republican but doesn’t stir the pot and follows the leadership.
The most high profile possible candidate in the district is the current Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer, who narrowly lost the GOP primary for governor. It would be an oddity for him to represent it, however, as the district is strangely drawn (originally gerrymanders for Democrats which later backfired). Comer is from the smaller eastern end of the district in south central Kentucky while the majority of the district is the western part of the state, so I would not say this is a shoo-in as someone prominent from the western part of the state may be able to win it...we’ll see.
Keep in mind it was a three way primary. What were considered to be the two top GOP candidates destroyed each other and Bevins won the nomination with an 80-vote plurality.
While this may be true, they are getting things accomplished.
Things are off to a quick start in the district. State Agriculture Commissioner James Comer has announced, as has Whitfield District Director Michael Pape. Other possible GOP contenders include state Senator Max Wise and former White House aide Scott Jennings, who seems to be the Establishment RINO candidate if he runs.
Who is “they”, and what is being accomplished ? (I’m not being sarcastic, I don’t know what you’re explicitly referring to)
Comer has won the primary by a wide margin.
I expect Comer will win the seat handily. Have you seen the photo of his Democrat opponent ? He looks... possessed.
