An Imperfect Catholic Joins the Opinion Brigade on Pope Francis

~snip~

The Pope is only infallible when he speaks ex cathedra( or from the Throne of Peter, the first Pope) and it is only on issues of faith and morals. Everything else is his opinion based on his own life experiences. Pope Francis is being depicted as a Marxist because he allegedly speaks about global warming and redistribution of wealth. Therefore he has won praise from the leftist community even though he has condemned abortion and supports marriage as a sacrament between a man and a woman.

Those on the far right are upset by his assertion that all good people are deserving of heaven which is not how evangelicals see salvation as only for those who accept Jesus. That message is, however, what I've always been taught of Catholicism. It is only God who determines who will get into heaven.

The African priest who served the mass this Sunday reminded us that the thief who was a criminal that was crucified with Jesus was allowed to enter paradise after acknowledging the Lord. "How long did that take," the priest asked, "for a man who had been a criminal all his life to be saved?" The Pope was right when he said it wasn't up to him to judge.

When I was a columnist for the New York Sun, my editor, Seth Lipsky, always assigned me to write about the Popes and Catholic issues. I was very close with Edward Cardinal Egan who thanked me for my supportive columns on parochial schools. I was invited to a breakfast and lunch at his residence and was even asked to do one of the readings at the televised Christmas Midnight Mass. I turned him down but now wish I had been more obliging to the late Cardinal who was a good...

“The Pope is only infallible when he speaks ex cathedra( or from the Throne of Peter, the first Pope) and it is only on issues of faith and morals.”

Even then, he is fallible.

After being raised Protestant, our son married a Catholic girl and proudly became a Catholic himself. He has been faithful in the 18 months they have been married . . often attending Mass after working a 12-hour shift as a Paramedic.
But, he has had a big problem with Pope Francis’ remarks while visiting the U.S. I have sent this article to him, hoping it helps him to somewhat understand better. I hate to see division between him and his wife over this Pope. I have also read various comments to him from Catholics at Free Republic . . especially those of you who also find some of Pope Francis’ remarks to be terribly left wing rhetoric.

Pope also infallible when he ratifies teachings of Bishops in essential unanimous opinion scattered throughout the world or gathered in an ecumenical council.

Ex Cathedra means formally from “throne”.

His is indeed, infallible only on faith and morals. His behaviors and opininions deserve basic respect only.

This Pope makes things confusing because he mixes up opinion and authentic teachings, with emphasis on some social aspects of teachings and few of the faith or moral aspects. He has a duty to cleat up this confusion.

Your son only need fixate on the Son, the Most Holy Eucharist, and let papal matters be papal matters, while he [your son] feeds on Jesus. No one should ever let this pope [or any pope] decide for them to leave the Eucharist.

Good article, but what the pope said is not as much of a problem as what he did not say.

He had an opportunity, with a worldwide audience, and the ear of national and international leaders, to speak to the evils of our time. He did not.

The earth contains the blood and bodies of almost 60 million babies murdered in the US. Where is the outrage?

The recent papal visit has seemed to send the cheeky sorts who lurk on this site bashing all things Catholic into a frothing rage, emitting childish, petulant remarks, each worse than the last...

however, I wil be happy to see Francis ride off into the sunset...he epitomizes those Catholics who are indifferent to their theoogical identities...

* The Pope is only infallible when he speaks ex cathedra( or from the Throne of Peter, the first Pope) and it is only on issues of faith and morals. *

This pope doesn't live up to this criteria.
Whenever he preaches the Climate Change Scam he is lying, therefore, he cannot be a leader when it comes to morals.

Taqiyya isn't in the Bible. That's a muslim idea.

This article is all over the place

Here she tells all, but doesn’t know it:

“I have allowed politics, health and family obligations to push faith to the back of my mind”

She goes on to say that practicing catholicism includes visiting the Sistine chapel and going to see the pope when he comes

This catholic writer thinks this is what Catholicism is. And she writes a religious column. Ok

Well she’s right about this:

I believe that the church should provide sanctuary for those in need but allowing them to acquire government benefits paid for by taxpayers is criminal.

But then she says something contradictory:

Pope Francis is merely a vicar and is imparting the message of Christ that it is up to each one of us, not Caesar.

The pope is telling Caesar what to do (to act unlawfully, BTW) in matters of economics but in a matter that is affecting our nation’ entire culture.

She is not coherent.

Tell him to just stick with the basic tenets of the church and to find out what they are

The pope is a human just like all the clergy are. They can not destroy the Church.

I agree. Also, the last thing those of us who are orthodox and not happy with this Pope should do is leave the Church. I guess it’s never occurred to the people who threaten to leave that God has called them and wants them where they are because maybe they have some role to play in saving or restoring the Church.

I did read the article and, while insightful and thoughtful, I fixated on the quotation, “It is only God who determines who will get into heaven,” and I take some exception to it.

Do Catholics, including the Pope, not believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God given to man? If so, did God Himself, through His son Jesus Christ, not tell us in John 14:6 that, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” That seems pretty straightforward and it’s either true or it isn’t. Ergo, hasn’t God already told us who will get into heaven?
