A 12-year-old boy has spoken about the moment he told first-response officers how he and his four siblings fought off their shotgun-wielding father and saved their mother's life.

.....

The children have revealed how they elbowed an intoxicated Fields, grabbed his gun and pinned him down to stop him firing a third time after he stormed into their isolated Queensland home.

Cameron, 12, recalled how he repeatedly ran up and down the drive of their Chambers Flat home, south of Brisbane, to check whether police had arrived after his 10-year-old sister called triple-0.

'I kept running up and down the drive to check on mum. And then I found them (police),' he said in a 60 Minutes report on Channel 9.

'I said: 'Down here, down here. My mum's been shot. Don't worry, I've disarmed him, the gun is under the balcony, it's all safe to go up.'

.....

All five children then leapt into action and the eldest boys, who are both actors, called on some fight-scene training to overpower their mother's attacker as he reloaded.

Cameron said: 'I thought it might have been the end for the whole family. For my brothers and sisters as well, maybe

'I guess my body decided I’m going to do what I can to stop this. No matter what I have to do.

....

While the boys were fighting off Fields, who was momentarily knocked out by their blows, Kaylea grabbed her mother and hid her under a bush outside.

Even four-year-old Zane had the presence of mind to grab his two-year-old sister, Samantha, and hide under a bed.

Good kids. Hard time there, though. So, what’s your take?

My opinion - these are good kids who did a great job. I wish they hadn’t been put in that position. Daryl Fields should rot in prison (he is currently awaiting sentencing and I hope he gets life - the maximum allowed) and then burn in hell.

I’d wish him dead except the most likely way that would have happened would be for one of his kids to have shot him, and I wouldn’t wish that on any child.

How’s your foster care system? Any good?

It differs a lot from state to state, so I’m honestly not sure what it’s like where they are. I know the whole care system has issues in my state though - not enough foster carers, and inadequate alternatives. I hope these kids are in a decent situation.
