George Washington was socialist! You’re a genius, when does your book come out?

Not that it is a dispositive point, but I have probably worked in business and studied economics longer than you’ve been alive. By itself, longevity doesn’t mean anything. There are a lot of old economists who are socialists.

In your scenario, the American consumer, the forgotten beneficiary in all this, wins by getting the best for minimum price regardless if whether the foreign government had anything to do with it. The result is availablity of more discretionary spending elsewhere and other parts of the economy benefit.

The free market can be disruptive and free trade may disrupt certain specific manufacturing sectors but the overall economy and many non-special-interest sectors of the economy like small businesses, the heart of economic growth and development, benefit.

Sooner or later the same old lesson that hasn’t yet been learned is demonstrated: “fairness” by government intervention in the economy does more harm than good and retards economic growth and wealth creation.

Looking at our economy from the standpoint of a particular manufacturer or manufacturing sector blinds one from the overall benefits of the free market and the problems of government interference which is why the feds have been allowed and encouraged by special-interest manufacturing groups to interfere in their favor.

When we talk about “fair trade”. we are talking about basically one thing: tariffs. Tariffs are a tax that artificially raises prices on goods coming in and the loser is the American consumer. Artificially higher prices create less discretionary spending and other areas of the economy suffer as a result.

Over and over again, tariffs have proven themselves to be self-inflicting economic penalties that hurt the country raising the tariffs. Yet these lesson are are lost in the emotional harangue and demagoguery which again demonstrates that people often decide to spend their money (or let the government take it) irrationally and against their own self-interest. Remember it is government that gets the residue of funds from tariffs so of course it is in government’s interest to do so. But the rule is government interest and benefit is contrary to free individual interest and benefit.

Over and over again, tariffs have proven themselves to be self-inflicting economic penalties that hurt the country raising the tariffs.

Bullcrap.

The lack of imported goods relatively quickly gave very strong incentives to start building several U.S. industries in the Northeast. Textiles and machinery especially grew. Many new industries were set up and run profitably during the wars and about half of them failed after hostilities ceased and normal imports resumed. Industry in the U.S. was advancing up the skill set, innovation knowledge and organization curve.

Read more at: Tariffs in United States history

I would say tariffs are needed now more than ever to stop the insane DE-industrialization of the USA.

I prefer that more jobs are brought back from China, Japan, Mexico & India than anything else.

Only potato heads think there are more desirable items than jobs.

Trump is the ONLY candidate who has the fortitude and knowledge to accomplish that.

Everything else is fluff and nonsense. I have recent graduates college kids, and they have hundreds of friends in similar situations. First thing they ALL want is jobs.

If you do not understand difference between free trade and fair trade, I am afraid you are a lost cause.

From first hand experience, we do NOT have fair trade with most countries with which we have YUGE trade deficits, year after year.

Only the rich donors want this to continue. Their goal is to export manufacturing to cheap labor & low tax countries, and import H1-B visa workers cheap labor express.

the forgotten beneficiary in all this

Bullcrap. You don't move a production facility 5000 miles away to shave off 5-7% on production cost to turn around and pass all of that "savings" to the consumer. No, that 5-7% goes to the bottom line. The winners are the corporation, the Chinese govt, the coolies that assemble the crap, and the stock holders. The losers are the American people. The consumer does not see any price reduction and quality seems to suffer.

If you do not understand that this is because we are a wealthy nation, and we cannot force poorer nations to want to buy more of our higher-priced goods, then there's not much hope for your economics education.

And so, with your ideas, the inevitable result is even less goods sold overseas, and less overseas goods purchased here, meaning higher prices in all cases, so all Americans wind up paying more, which means having less. Thanks so much for deciding that I am no longer free to purchase goods from anyone that I wish! AND that I should pay more, just because you say so! You're a stinkin' genius!

How would you know result would be even less goods sold overseas, and less overseas goods purchased here?

We have not tried FAIR TRADE for 5 decades since I arrived in USA as a graduate student in Engineering.

Countries like China & Japan can not survive very well without trade with United States. We have partied by borrowing money. It is almost too late to change directions. But just may be we have one chance with Trump.

With all other candidates, the trade deficits continue, foreigners will own more and more of USA, and Obama’s dream of bringing us down to 3rd world levels will soon become reality. We are almost there now...our airports and highways and bridges are already so inferior to countries I visited within last 2 years, all outside of Europe.

I would like to see Trump send that sickening Pelley character to a hospital to be treated for post Trump attack stress disorder. Pelley is disgusting, he is way too fond of himself.

Marxism is about wealth redistribution. This has nothing to do with wealth redistribution or Marxism. Simple as that.

How do you advocate doing this? By socialistic government intervention? Are you against Apple doing what it wants with its money?

Every capitalist needs a little socialism now and then to make deals go down easier.

No, this has nothing to do with embracing socialism. It has to do with stopping restrictions to our products from China. When China doesn’t honor our intellectual property laws is that free trade? When China throws tariffs on our products to prevent them from coming into their country, is that capitalism?
