This is a crisis we'd better get a handle on before it's too late -- if it isn't already!

Newark, the other city by the bay. What a hole.

Ironic, Newark was one of the first of Johnson’s Model Cities Program. The model should have been based on what happened to Bikini Island and that would have been an improvement.

All this from someone who was born there and worked there for ten years. Oakland of the east.

He could have funded a competing, private system, though.

Now that would have been very interesting indeed! Take the same population as the public schools (no cherry-picking), but insist on strict classroom discipline, and offer a demanding, classical curriculum.

Use all that money for extra tutoring in math, English, and science. No money for fancy consultants.

Ah...what could have been.

This ought to get a lot of coverage as evidence that the problem with government schools is NOT inadequate funding. However, it will not.

Ding, ding, ding - we have a thread winnah!

Money won’t raise the intelligence level of the kids. It won’t make their parents stop taking drugs and committing crimes. It won’t make the kids try to learn. It won’t make them stop blaming whitey for their self-inflicted pathologies.

Mark, I could’ve told you. For a ten percent consulting fee, I would have told you and saved you the rest of the money. The usual suspects saw an easy, naive mark wandering in from tech world, and they fleeced him. Ok, I’m done gloating. The real question is, did Mark learn anything? Is he ready to try again and invest his resources in school choice? Or just give it to the local archdiocese for parochial schools?

Here in Alabama we are in the middle of a “crisis” with our budget. Always whining from teachers and administrators about “our poor schools and underpaid teachers.

Well, someone posted a chart. Never really paid attention......

40% of Alabama’s budget went to “Education”

With an additional 19% for “higher education”

59% of Alabama’s total budget for education. And it’s not enough?

This is similar to what Catholic schools due (the cost is little or nothing for the poor), or charter programs such as the KIPP program. The “filter” is simply one parent who cares enough to make a little effort, whether or not that parent has any education.

Consider the impact Ben Carson’s mother had on her children’s education, simply by force of will.

The system is designed to suck in money and distribute it to the politically connected and corrupt.

When you throw money into it, it will show you how perfectly it is designed.

It ain’t about the funding. It’s about commitment and - *cough*..genetics.

It's about culture.

It’s never enough and its not about the ‘children.’ It’s about lining their pockets and padding their nests.
