The deadly stampede at the Haj in Saudi Arabia on Thursday is just the latest tragedy to strike the pilgrimage.
Here is a timeline of significant incidents during the annual event, which draws around two million Muslim faithful from around the world.

• 2006 January 6: 76 people die when a hotel collapses in the city center.
January 12: 364 pilgrims are killed in a stampede during the stoning ritual in Mina. The ritual involves Haj participants throwing pebbles at three headstones, symbolizing their rejection of Satan.

Maybe I’m.missing something? Does something happen at these Haji events which whips people into a frenzy?? This isn’t the first stampede they have had related to the Hajj events.
And to think the media is so unfairly accused of doing nothing but report negative stories.

I was living in SA when this occurred. The list in the article doesn't include the many accidents related to the travel of hajis to SA. Plane crashes, sinking ships, etc. have killed thousands as well.

AFP has more details of the stoning the devil ritual, during which the stampede occurred:
...The ritual emulates the Prophet Abraham, who is said to have stoned the devil at three locations when he tried to dissuade Abraham from God’s order to sacrifice his son Ishmael.
At the last moment, God spares the boy, sending a sheep to be sacrificed in his place.
The world’s Muslims commemorated Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son by slaughtering cows, sheep and other animals on Thursday.
Except that WE know (as does every Christian and Jewish believer out there) that it was ISAAC, the true ‘child of promise’, not Ishmael.
Just another occurrence of the massteria that is Islam.
