Israel Military Says It Is Coordinating With Russia on Syria

JERUSALEM — Sep 24, 2015, 6:15 AM ET

Israel has set up a joint mechanism with the Russian military to coordinate their operations in Syria and avoid any accidental confrontations, a senior Israel military official said Thursday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of military regulations, said that teams headed by each of the militaries' deputy chiefs will hold their first meeting in two weeks and will discuss coordination of aerial, naval and electromagnetic operations around Syria.

Wow, this has to be awkward. Russia is allied with Syria which is allied with Hezbollah, who wants to kill all Israelis. You’d need to keep a list of players in front of you at all times.

So, an Israeli is captured by Hezbollah and Israel seeks Russia’s help getting him back. How would that work out? And, what would be the potential fallout from the various outcomes?

The events occurring in the Middle East now...like deja vu, I’ve heard these headlines before, but they weren’t headlines. It was an older pastor talking about end times when I was a kid.

Russia needs some time to build up its forces. The Israelis may have been asked to provide some air cover while this build up occurs. If ISIS or others mass in some area; the IAF may bomb them to buy time. In return if Iran does what it is going to do and continue to work on the bomb; Russia will not interfere with IDFs’ actions against said bomb.

If I was Russia I would be seeking to see if I can make Syria (with Iran agreeing in silence) to recognize Israel and screw over the Palestinians. The number of secular Palestinians from the PLO days (many of whom were Christians) are long diminished and in place we have Sunni jihadi Palestinians.

Therefore, Syria defending Palestine for pan Arab nationalist reasons is a dead ideology. Syria's Assad's ruling clique is Alawite Shia and the Sunnis Arabs are trying to genocide them so why defend them? Putin could tell Assad by recognizing Israel it would catch Washington and Europe off guard who now call him a monster. Suddenly he is a peace maker.

Russia remains in Syria to protect Alawites and Christians (they tend to live near each other in defensible mountain positions) and Russia controls Syria's export pipelines from Iraq and Iran and cuts off the Saudi Gulf Arab pipelines.

I doubt it’s anything that far reaching. More like neither side wants to get in a shooting war with each other over the skies of Syria. Just enough cooperation to stay out of each other’s way.

Russia may end up in a better position to keep those dogs on a leash. Sort of like the way China has some influence over the rabid North Korea. I have no doubt the Israelis brought those legitimate concerns to the table. Certainly Israel has learned that we are both ineffectual and untrustworthy. They may just be making the best of a bad deal.
