German ministers were reportedly warned of VW test-beating software

German government ministers reportedly turned a blind eye to Volkswagen installing cheat devices to fool U.S. diesel emissions tests, raising the possibility that the mushrooming scandal could cause embarrassment for Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Britain's Daily Telegraph, citing a German parliamentary answer, reports that German ministers were warned months ago of "defeat device" software installed on Volkswagen’s diesel cars. The transport ministry answered a parliamentary question about the country's car industry on July 28 saying, "The federal government is award of (defeat devices), which have the goal of (test) cycle detection," according to The Telegraph.

The paper reported that while the government's statement did not specifically mention Volkswagen, the question that precipitated it, from a member of the country's Green Party, implied that the carmaker engaged in such practices.

VW is not the only one cheating on "emissions". But then again...this "emissions" insanity is contrived by a Marxist white house.

Had a z28 about 13 years ago. Guy said it failed. I told him i’d be back in an hour. Make it pass. No problem :)

But those days are done I guess.

I am of the opinion that the software did not cheat. Rather the software was making sure that the car complied with the law which requires specific conditions at the time of the test.

You mean! You mean!

The Germans told us something was good when it wasn’t so they could sell more of their products?

Like how they pushed Obama for us?

So he could screw everything up and they could sell more of their products?

Minnesota had a state emission testing program for a couple of years. A big dose of alcohol in the gas tank could pass a ‘51 Packard.

My dad owned a ‘51 when we were stationed in Japan in the 1950s. It looked like a giant black upside down bath tub.

Awesome. I would LOVE to see that pulled out as a defense ... the alle und ordnung Germans follow the law to the EXACT LETTER and completely circumvent the intent.

And then they can add insult to injury by trotting out a bunch of engineers to testify that since the law used a bogus pollution measure (pollution for gallon burned) instead of the better one (pollution per mile driven) they were complying with the intent as well by increasing MPG.

The last thing on earth that some EPA idiots would want....is to end up in a court situation where German engineers will be brought in and testify. You could be talking about hours and hours of lecture, and the judge would be weeping by the end.

VW should demand a jury trial. Twelve of our fellow low-info voters will fall asleep fifteen minutes into the explanation of what “C” code is. They’ll be forced to acquit because they can’t possibly understand the evidence.

Yes, I suspect the bureaucrats crafted language that VW merely exploited. Honestly, after dealing with tracking down a problem with the "evaporative control" hardware on my car, I'm inclined to buy a pre-OBD2 pickup or SUV and build it up like new. Something with "enthusiast" aftermarket support, so I can continue to do maintenance work on brakes, bearings, suspension, etc. To Hell with these cars that are intended to be as disposable as a Bic lighter.

They understood that image and numbers are important .

If were really concerned about pollution, we would measure pollution per mile instead of out the tail pipe at idle.
