Syria says would welcome Russian army base in Latakia: Interfax

This is breaking news there were earlier reports that Russia was opening an air base in Latakia. So either this is the same base (and they are now going public with it) or this is the third military base Russia has opened. A Russian naval base in Tartus, an airbase in Latakia and now an army base in Latakia (same base as the airport or new one).

Silence in the American press tells me they are covering up for Obama's foreign policy failures.

We just got the clearest sign yet that Russia doesn't really care about fighting ISIS in Syria
Business Insider ^ | 12 Sep 15 | Natasha Bertrand

Moscow will reportedly provide Russian troops in Syria with an advanced antiaircraft missile system as part of its military support for Syrian president Bashar Assad.

"This system is the advanced version used by Russia, and it's meant to be operated by Russians in Syria," a Western diplomat who is regularly briefed on US, Israeli, and other intelligence assessments told Reuters.

And as The Daily Beast's Michael Weiss points out, any antiaircraft missiles deployed by Russian troops in Syria won't be directed at ISIS, since ISIS has no air force.

In fact, none of the rebels do — only government forces have access to aircraft.

Russia has substantially increased its military presence in Syria over the past two weeks under the guise of helping the embattled Assad fight ISIS and other extremists. ..."

From Reuters, Sept 11, 2015:

Even if Russians operated the [anti-aircraft] missiles and kept them out of the hands of the Syrian army, the arrival of such an advanced anti-aircraft system could also unsettle Israel, which in the past has bombed sophisticated arms it suspected were being handed to Assad’s Lebanese guerrilla allies, Hezbollah.

“In the Middle East you never know what will happen. If the Russians end up handing it (SA-22) over to the Syrian military I don’t think the Israelis would intervene but they would go bananas if they see it heading towards Hezbollah in Lebanon,” the diplomatic source said.

An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment on the missile system. A senior Israeli defense official briefing reporters on Thursday said Israel was in contact with Moscow and would continue its policy of stopping advanced weapons reaching Hezbollah.

“We have open relations with the Russians who have come to save Assad in the civil war. Along with this, we will not allow our sovereignty to be compromised or the transfer of advanced or chemical weapons (to Hezbollah). We are following the developments and keeping open channels with Moscow.” “

Again, ISIS nor the other groups there have any aircraft!

“Two Western officials and a Russian source told Reuters that Moscow is sending Pantsir-S [ANTI-AIRCRAFT] missiles to the war-torn country where the U.S. has been engaging in airstrikes on Islamic State.

Russia is also staging naval exercises off Syria’s coast.

The anti-aircraft system would be operated by Russian troops, rather than Syrians, the Western officials said.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said his country was sending equipment to help Syrian President Bashar al Assad fight Islamic State.”

Look at the road network.

Just armchairing, but bases at Latakia allow the Russians to secure the coastal area to the mountains.

And later support operations at Idlib and then Aleppo? Heavy guns in the mountains west of Idlib could cover a WIDE area, that ISIS has been assaulting for some time.

Israeli, Russian Armies to Form Joint Committee on Syria Actions

Committee will coordinate naval and aerial activities, military chiefs agree in Moscow meeting.

Gili Cohen Sep 22, 2015 3:05 AM

The Israeli and Russian militaries will form a joint committee to coordinate their activities in Syria, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and his Russian counterpart Valery Gerasimov agreed in a meeting in Moscow on Monday evening.

The committee, which will be headed by the countries' deputy chiefs of staff, would coordinate both naval and aerial activities, as well as electro-magnetic activities, to avoid interference in electronic warfare, a senior Israeli officer told reporters.

"There's aerial activities to the north of the country that may or may not overlap with the Russians' activities there," the officer said.

As I noted on the aircraft thread, Netanyahu and the head of Israeli Intelligence were in Moscow on Monday, meeting with Putin and Defense Minister Shoigu.

I don’t think Israel “feels threatened”, but rather gave them their ISIS info, BY HAND, personally, so the Obamunists can’t see it

Again, ISIS nor the other groups there have any aircraft!

Russia does not want to get bombed "by accident" like happened to the Chinese embassy during Clinton's air war over Serbia. That's why.

“Operated by Russians in Syria”

Translation:

So if you bomb it, you’ll be killing Russians.

The Obama regime, France, and Turkey have been refraining from waging total war on ISIS in Syria, believing that it would help Assad. By letting these nations know that overthrowing Assad is not not going to happen, Putin has eliminated this excuse for inaction.

Bibi and Putin already sorted this out...

The Iran deal, which your boy KGB Putin loves and claims to have had a major hand in writing, states we and other world powers must come to the defense of Iran should anyone (including Israel) attack their nuke facilities. And you don't think Israel is concerned that the Russians have installed anti-aircraft systems in nearby Syria, particularly when ISIS nor the other groups there have any aircraft!

Trump: Iran Deal Requires U.S. Protecting Iran in Event of Israeli Strike

by Jacob Kornbluh
Sept 2, 2015

In a phone interview with CNN Tuesday evening, Trump claimed that there’s “something in the Iran deal” that “people don’t understand” saying if someone attacks Iran, “we have to come to their defense.”

“Does that include Israel?” Trump asked. “And most people say yes, they don’t have an exclusion for Israel. So if Israel attacks Iran, according to that deal, I believe, the way it reads, unless they have a codicil or they have something to it, that we have to fight with Iran against Israel.” ..."

Trump was most probably referring to language highlighted by the opponents of the deal. On page 142, the deal includes a clause that states, “Co-operation through training and workshops to strengthen Iran’s ability to protect against, and respond to nuclear security threats, including sabotage, as well as to enable effective and sustainable nuclear security and physical protection systems.”

Washington-based Center for Security Policy asserted that Annex III appears “to commit the United States and other world powers to the defense of Iran’s nuclear program.”

Russian build-up in Syria part of secret deal with Iran’s Quds Force leader

September 11, 2015
Jennifer Griffin, Lucas Tomlinson
FoxNews.com

As the Pentagon warily eyes a Russian military build-up in Syria, Western intelligence sources tell Fox News that the escalated Russian presence began just days after a secret Moscow meeting in late July between Iran’s Quds Force commander — their chief exporter of terror — and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Fox News has learned Quds head Qassem Soleimani and Putin discussed such a joint military plan for Syria at that meeting, an encounter first reported by Fox News in early August. ...”

The Quds Force is the international arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, involved in exporting terrorism to Iran’s proxies throughout the Middle East including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen. ...”

Officials who have monitored the build-up say they’ve seen more than 1,000 Russian combatants — some of them from the same plainclothes Special Forces units who were sent to Crimea and Ukraine. Some of these Russian troops are logistical specialists and needed for security at the expanding Russian bases.

Eben under the worst case scenario, and Assad's Syria falls, Russia emerges as the defacto protector of Syria's Alawite community on the coast. I think that is where many Christian also live. Alawites being rural and Christians in the coastal towns and integrated cities.

In Sunni country Russia would be subjected to IED attacks but in Alawite territory they are seen as saviours. Clearly the USA will claim it is for a multi ethnic and tolerant Syria but in truth they will back the Sunnis in any post Assad occupation and partition.

I can't believe any Alawite or Christian for that matter will trust a post Assad Sunni govt even if it is not ISIS.

So Russia's position is super secure and defensible either way in any scenario I can think of.

And Turkey can't block the Dardanelles due to long standing treaties to keep it open and navigable. Maybe some moron in Washington will propose that to stop Russian re-supply but that is pretty much tantamount to starting WW3 if the Dardanelles treaties are placed aside to stop Russia. Who knows, the McCain types are nuts like that and Syria seems to have unhinged them. Seeing Russia in Syria may unhinge them more.
