Groups of pastors and their congregations were at the forefront of the American Revolution and now its time for Christians to retake leadership positions in government and restore the nation to the values the Constitution was founded upon, Pastor Rafael Cruz said Monday as he brought the message of his sons presidential campaign to the territory.
An afternoon meet and greet in Emancipation Garden on St. Thomas allowed Ted Cruzs father to huddle with a small V.I. contingent that he said were integral to the campaign process.
While residents in the territory are not able to vote for president, local delegates will represent the Virgin Islands at the 2016 Republican Convention and could potentially vote for the Texas senator as the partys nominee for president.
We just want to make sure everyone here has their voices heard so that we can all unify to restore America to that shining city on the hill once again, Rafael Cruz said afterward, adding that he was anxious to meet local clergy members and religious supporters that could help encourage others to vote.
Cruz said 26 million Christians did not vote in the 2012 presidential election, while another 12 million are not even registered to vote.
Thats 38 million Christians that stayed at home, he said. So how are those values being represented if the Christians are sitting at home? If you dont get involved in the political process, then you are not being part of the solution.
And according to Cruz, the United States right now is facing several challenges that can only be fixed by someone who can bring back the Judeo-Christian principals the Constitution was founded on. He said most of the nations founding fathers were seminary students and when the American Revolution came around, it was pastors and their congregations that fought the very first battles.
Cruz also spoke about his own time on the campaign trail with former President Ronald Reagan and the political discussions around the dinner table when his son was only 9 years old.
Sharing stories from his sons own childhood, Rafael Cruz said the goal of the campaign is to create a government system that helps people from all walks of life achieve their dreams, a phenomenon that he said can only happen in America.
The campaign, which was brought to the territory by local Republican Party Chairman John Canegata and organized on the ground by representative Max Schanfarber, will continue Tuesday on St. Croix.
ohhhh cool! I have family in the USVI. Lovely place. Catholic mostly I think.
every vote in the primary counts!
I agree with Rafael Cruz.
Usually the preferred GOPe candidate wins these because nobody pays any attention to them so their local delegates just take the call and do as they’re told.
The Virgin Islands have 9 delegates total out of the 2,470 total convention delegates.
They have 3 party leaders and 6 chosen by a caucus/convention process.
