It was Friday, Sept. 11, the 14th anniversary of the most devastating foreign military attack in history on the U.S. mainland.

Ahmed Mohamed, 14, was sitting in his Irving, Texas, English class when an alarm went off inside a briefcase the youngster had with him.

When he opened the briefcase to turn off the alarm his teacher went to inspect the device, which did not look like a “clock,” but more like a homemade improvised explosive device – the kind of contraption that would never make it, for instance, through a TSA airport check.
