Burning coals is a metaphor whose exact meaning is in dispute, but one widely accepted by theologians is the sense of repentant shame that may be aroused at receiving a sincere kindness that is glaringly undeserved.
I’d still be curious about the upshot of all this. Could this (unintended by the ones who bestowed the honor, who doubtless had a grand cover-up on their mind) embarrass him into a better vision of life than his father had?
This is so ridiculously out of proportion that it looks like a caricature of an honor. Reality can work irony too.

The bible, at least, has an explanation. It does not flatter us. If this were the end of the story we would sail right on to hell (having already embraced it in a death grip while here).
Conservatives can come up with lies too, incidentally — oversimplifications of complex history that are checkered, not pure black or pure white. Due to Judeo-Christian tradition embodied therein, they are not as severe as those of the godless. A reverence for God tends to push people in the direction of honesty. But even then all people have a lying problem, the question is only how mild or severe it is.

Thanks for the pic - I hadn’t seen the swag he got from his hoax bomb dry run but I’m not at all surprised.
The one good thing that came from all of this is that he and his family outed themselves. They won’t be able to repeat their shenanigans because everyone will be watching their every move from now on.
