He was a Democrat activist but he was a real Democrat not one of those 60s campus radical, psycho spoiled brats that took over the Party in the 70s and he was no friend of one of those pukes, Bill Clinton. I recall that he could call and talk to Hillary though.
I listened to Eason in the afternoon and Lee Rodgers in the evening on KGO. Rodgers went to Seattle (early 90s) and I think Garret immediately took Rodgers' slot.
Garret had a friend of Bill's (FOB) as a guest and I called to ask about the New York Post's questions surrounding Vince Foster's "suicide." Garret took my call immediately and confronted the FOB about the questions surrounding the claim of suicide.
(The New York Post reporter I believe was fired for writing about the questions. The reporter founded Newsmax.)
Unfortunately Garret got into deep trouble from investors in his failed business efforts. The local investors felt cheated forcing Garret to look for investors out of state. Meanwhile we was exposed to prosecution based upon complaints from original investors. That appeared to be the main cause for his suicide IIRC.
I recall reading that on the day he committed suicide he cancelled the appointment with his lawyer to meet someone at the airport (a disgruntled investor from back east.. like from New Jersey, if you get my drift -- or from Arkansas?) later that day he went off the Golden Gate Bridge.
All the on-air folks agreed it was suicide but IIRC no one saw anything that Garret was in anyway that disturbed by his troubles. I did read that Eason doubted the suicide but was told to shut up.
Speaking of Rodgers on KGO evenings.. there was a first-time caller who had the most fantastic voice I've ever heard. Everything that guy said came across as 100-percent believable. Not one iota of doubt. I even considered calling the show to tell Rodgers when Rodgers told the guy pretty much what I was thinking. IIRC he was an Army recruiter stationed in Reno, NV. He's probably a mega-millionaire TV preacher now. :)
When Rodgers returned from Seattle I didn't know it (or anything about KSFO) until Art Bell expressed amazement at the salary Rodgers was getting to do the KSFO morning show, $250,000 I think Bell said.
I remember both the Garrett “suicide” and the shock over it...and ROgers going to KSFO.
The move to KSFO was a great success.
The suicide stunk of oddness!
