The US Air Force is getting ready to announce the winner of a multibillion-dollar contract to build a new generation of long-distance bombers that will replace aging, Cold War machines.
Dubbed the Long Range Strike Bomber (LRSB) program, the Air Force will in the coming weeks award the mega-contract to either Northrop Grumman or a team made up of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
The program envisions the creation of between 80 and 100 strategic bombers to replace America's fleet of B-52s and B-1s. Almost everything about it is classified, save for the cost of each plane, which was set at $550 million per unit in 2010 dollars.
Experts and industry watchers say the bomber will be a very different animal from those it replaces.

Sorry i can’t take them seriously... Are they going to stop building it after its forty percent complete? Sounds like they are sending their friends a nice Christmas present of a multi billion dollar contract. I know it’s not because they want to defend this country..
Looks like a serious waste of money to me.

They’re just waiting for the ChiCom government to give approval to one of the designs.
Want 80-100, get 8-10, if not canceled outright due to needing money for entitlements, feeding the homeless, and just plain more free stuff.
My fears exactly. Weapon Systems acquisition is seriously broken. Everything is too expensive, takes too long, fails to meet full requirements, and ends up being cancelled before actually reaching initial operating capability.
Someone should overhaul how we do acquisitions BEFORE we begin our next humonguous effort.
Based on technology development....I think we’d be better off to just develop long-distance drones that loiter for hours and hours, and then launch if necessary, long-distance missiles.
Rods from God would be good. It’s a system that is not likely to ever become obsolete.
> which was set at $550 million per unit
So, the eventual off-the-line cost is going to be $1 billion per?
Rod from God, like that..lol

And supporting 3rd world, American-hating immigrants as we implement our “strength through diversity” goals.
