The Greek civilization, the Roman civilization, the British civilization, the Chinese civilization, the Japanese civilization, the Russian civilization all had a number of things in common: They were empires founded upon brutal subjugation of enemies, the threat of violence, the practice of slavery, racism, and the fostering of intellectual and political elites.

…….but we call them “civilizations.” Why? Because they were political entities that influenced the thinking of very large numbers of human beings over very long periods of time.

To say that there was (note the past tense) a civilization that can can be called “Islamic” is not to endorse it’s ideas, only to state that they have been very influential and very enduring.

Very dubious. The Ottoman Empire lasted some 600 years. They were good at conquering in the early centuries, before they became "the Sick Man of Europe." But as for civilization? Some nice architecture and bridges, but not much else. Maybe some poetry, I don't know. But nothing that I am aware of that was a lasting contribution to human thought. Meanwhile they were making a lot of people's lives miserable.

I don't think anyone who praises the Ottoman Empire will get many votes from Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians, or Armenians.
