Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s hand forced as Tony Abbott’s Cabinet ministers stay put

NONE of Tony Abbott’s Cabinet ministers has accepted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s invitation to resign, leading to the likelihood he will have to blast them out at week’s end.

All the ministers remained in their portfolios on Tuesday, including Treasurer Joe Hockey, who is set to be dumped to make way for Social Services Minister Scott Morrison.

Kevin Andrews, a long-time Abbott loyalist, publicly pleaded his case to remain as Defence Minister, saying he would “definitely’’ serve under Mr Turnbull.

Mr Andrews, a staunch conservative who has clashed with Mr Turnbull over his progressive views, told 3AW he stood as a candidate for deputy leader against Julie Bishop to prove his willingness to work with Mr Turnbull.

“What I’m trying to do is offer leadership in these circumstances. As he (Mr Turnbull) said, we’re a broad church and if we’re going to serve the people of Australia as best we can, we must reflect their broad interests as well,’’ he said.

Mr Andrews pitched to keep Defence, saying it was a complex portfolio and a “very significant time’’, with Australia starting air strikes on Syria from last week.

“It’s an important time to have some stability in the leadership of Defence,’’ he said.

Rumours that Education Minister Christopher Pyne, who was involved in Mr Turnbull’s coup, will replace Mr Andrews have been denied, but persist.

Mr Turnbull said “inevitably, there will be changes in ministerial arrangements’’ unless any chose to resign, but has kept the ministers in place until the end of the parliamentary week.

That led to the spectacle of doomed ministers such as Mr Hockey being forced to answer questions in Question Time on Tuesday about their portfolios — a task he managed with surprising grace.

Absolutely correct. I always made my employers fire me rather than me quitting/resigning. Resigning implies that at some point there might be a possibility of working together again.
