By the evening of 9/11/2001, I would have destroyed the entire Taliban infrastructure with tactical nuclear bombs. Perhaps I would have waited until 9/12/2001.

Would not have deployed a single soldier there (to the Middle East or to Afghanistan).

I would have dropped a Pave Blue on Baghdad, Tripoli, Damascus, Teheran, and Kabul.

I would then have given the authorities remaining in those nations 48 hours to produce the responsible parties or 1 million square feet of every one of those cities would be razed to the ground and the earth salted.

War means that you hit your enemy as hard as you can until he begs for mercy. You kill him and his wives and his children and stock and cities and farms, removing his ability to continue warring against you.

When you finally let up on him, you make HIM pay for forcing your reaction.

Nation-building in foreign lands is what destroyed Rome and Persia and Greece and England and ad infinitum. Now America is waltzing down that same garden path, oblivious to reality.
