Less Than Half of California Students Passed New Common Core Standards
NBC San Diego ^ | 9/9

The assessments, called Smarter Balanced, test understanding of the new Common Core standards, benchmarks for what students should master by the end of each grade in reading and math

Less than half of all California students passed new math and English tests aligned with the Common Core standards and considered indicators of college and career readiness, according to results released Wednesday.

Forty-four percent of students in third through eighth and 11th grades met or exceeded the new language-arts assessment, while 34 percent passed the math test. Though state education officials cautioned against drawing comparisons with previous standardized tests, the results reflect long-standing achievement gaps between low-income and affluent students.

"They indicate we have a long way to go," Michael Kirst, president of the state Board of Education, said of the scores. "We knew that, and our motto has been `patience, persistence and humility."'

Actually, individuals are not fluid, like orange juice. The title should have read, “FEWER THAN HALF........”.

How do these people get jobs in print media, anyway?

Headline fails to pass too. The choice between "less" and "fewer" hinges on whether the item in question comes in discrete, integer units. People come in discrete integer units, there may be 1, or 101, or 324, or any other number of people, but always a whole number, never a fraction. For this type of quantity, the correct comparison word is "fewer," not "less."

You use less (or more) sugar in your recipe, or your car uses less (or more) fuel to get from here to there. Not that one can't measure the sugar or fuel, just that the amount is stated on a continuous curve, not a curve that jumps by whole number increments.

Not five years ago, I predicted this outcome when the last fix was implemented.

I predicted that the people who came up with the old fix and it’s replacement, would be the same folks entrusted with yet another fix.

Here we are. We’ll see if California’s education muckity mucks are assigned to design the next fix.

% passed < 50% < 100%

Less than half.

Yes, I get your point.

Regardless, they’re going to blame economics and people for this, and not the retarded curriculum.

I believe the word “students” is the subject in the sentence therefore that invalidates the implied percentage which describes the students. I can’t remember, the word HALF would be only an adverb. Right?

You use less (or more) sugar in your recipe,

...

But sugar comes in discrete crystals. Such a conflict is why people with a math or science aptitude have trouble with the crazy rules of language.

Somehow we've got to get education out of the hands of the educators.
