Russia 'is building military base in Syria'
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | September 5th, 2015 | By Rob Crilly, New York

Russia is building a military base in Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s heartland, according to American intelligence officials, in the clearest indication yet of deepening Russian support for the embattled regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The anonymous officials say Russia has set up an air traffic control tower and transported prefabricated housing units for up to 1,000 personnel to an airfield serving the Syrian port city of Latakia.

Russia has also requested the rights to fly over neighbouring countries with military cargo aircraft during September, according to the reports.

The claims, which will raise fears that Russia is planning to expand its role in the country’s civil war, will ratchet up tensions between Moscow and Washington over the future of Syria and its brutal ruler.

Mr Obama on Friday met King Salman of Saudi Arabia to repeat their demand that any lasting settlement in Syria would require an end to the Assad regime.

Why is Obama doing the Saudi's bidding on this?

WHATEVER follows Assad will not be in the US best interests.

If we had taken a sane, hands off approach from the beginning the Russians would not be expanding their forces there.

Again, anything that follows the fall of Assad is certain to be Jihadi and radical.

Sucks strategically for us, but might help the Christians that Obama has spurned.

Yep. Yep and Yep. Same for Libyan leader, and that jerk Saddam. Better than the alternative.

At least Egypt came to its senses.

But no need to worry, mainstream says Russians are building it for humanitarian purposes, lol

an airfield serving the Syrian port city of Latakia.

So they won’t have just an airfield but a port also...

The Chinese are also assisting Assad by sending personnel and equipment.

Help me understand why it’s a bad thing if Putin helps Assad fight the jihadists. Why is that bad?

‘Cause, in the end, the Saudis are the source of all this trouble. Their religion, Wahhabi (Sunni) Islam, is the source of the ISIS’s doctrine, their money, in large part, finances it.
And we already know that nothing Obama does is intended to be good for the United States and its citizens. .

I’m not saying that’s a good thing, but please explain why it isn’t Assad may be brutal, but he represents order, his enemies represent jihad and annihilation of Christians. Or did I miss something

Great question, especially since these jihadists are ISIS.

It does give Russia a stronger foothold in the Middle East--especially if they help Assad survive. Syria, Iran and Russia would make a very powerful bloc.

Assad is backed by the Iranian mullahs, Russia, and China. That is NOT a good thing.

If either side wins, we lose. ISIS wins, we have a radical sunni caliphate in the Middle East. If Assad and Iran win, we have a land bridge between Iran and Israel.

Obama’s weakening our position in the world... it’s gonna get a lot worse before the election. Every two bit thug in the world knows the window of opportunity is closing if democrats are tossed out.

"If Assad and Iran win, we have a land bridge between Iran and Israel."

There has always been a land bridge from Russia to Israel.

Even if Iran and Syria were hostile to Russia, the Russians would encounter only token resistance in such a drive.

The is no change is THAT particular strategic dynamic.

I tend to think Putin is doing the good work that the West cannot, will not do here.

Of course they are doing it for their won nefarious purposes, the the fall of Assad and a secular Syria would be a major strategic disaster.

The negro community organizer from Chicago has removed America as a watch dog thus leaving a vacuum. Russia is merely filling that vacuum as is ISIS, Hamas etc etc. The negro community organizer from Chicago set out to damage America and has done so admirably. The negro community organizer from Chicago will increase the damage in the time remaining to him. (I still think that there is a possibility that he may find a “reason” to stay on suspending elections etc.)

"The negro community organizer from Chicago"

How is his race relevant? Why even bring it up?

Race is the single most important issue facing America today; simply look and listen. Whites do not make it an issue but the-community organizer, Black Lives Matter, Farrakhan, black congressional members, weekly assaults on white police, the knock out game the list goes on and on-all make it an issue. We are heading towards a Social War like it or not.

Russia and Syria have been allies for more than 50 years. One should worry about Cuba first.

If Assad loses, won’t all of Syrias remaining Christians be slaughtered? That’s what I gather, and if it’s true, sorry but I want Assad to win and stay in power

The fall of Assad wouldn’t lead to a “secular Syria”, but a jihadist Syria. At least that’s what I gather.
