My grandfather was a coal miner, and died in 1928 at the age of thirty, leaving six children and a pregnant wife. My grandmother farmed the little ones out to relatives, kept the older ones, and found a job as a cook in a boarding house. Privileged?

Yup. He was obviously ‘given’ the job because he was white.
