Rusty is right. The Shia Muslims treat the Christians and Jews much, much better than the Sunni do. But there are not very many Jews there and Christians are only about 10% of the population.

This has a significant effect on refugee resettlement and how that affects the coming plans for the US to take in more Syrian refugees.

Because of this civil war of sunni trying to topple the shia govt and the shia govt attacking sunni, displaced Christians & Shia in Syria stay away from the refugee camps, which are consequently mostly Sunni.

When the US takes in refugees, religion is not used as a criteria and the refugees come from the UN refugee camps. So many are complaining that there will be very few Christians amongst the refugees from Syria.

OTOH, there is a privately funded underground railroad moving Christians out of Syria, or into shia controlled parts of Syria.
