Millis public schools will be closed Thursday while investigators continue to hunt for the man who shot a police cruiser, causing it to hit a tree and burst into flames Wednesday afternoon.
The unidentified officer was able to escape the flames and began to return fire as the pickup truck fled south toward Medfield.
The officer was taken to Norwood Hospital to be evaluated and was later released, police said.
The shooter who fled the scene in the red or maroon truck was described as a white man, tanned, between 25 and 40 years old. Police said he is armed with a black handgun.
After the shots were fired a massive manhunt for the gunman was launched. The neighborhood was immediately locked down while police units, including a SWAT team, K-9 officers and a Massachusetts State Police helicopter combed the area.
Around 10:30 a.m., police said Millis Middle School received a call from someone who said a crime may occur in town at some point during the day, and about an hour later someone called in a bomb threat.
Emergency crews immediately responded and the building was secured. Investigators swept through the school, but no evidence of any device was found in the school.
Police said that while they don't believe the two incidents are connected, out of an abundance of caution Millis Public Schools will be closed Thursday.
"This is strictly to make sure that our schools are safe," Chief Richard Barrett said. "To have these incidents happen on the same day, even though we don't believe they are connected, we want to take all the precautions."
Police are asking anyone who may have been in the Forest Road area Wednesday, or anyone who may have seen the red or maroon pickup truck, to call 508-376-2233.
