Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas touted himself Monday as the only candidate on the GOP presidential debate stage earlier this month who has always opposed amnesty for illegal immigrants and as someone who has consistently led on more than just one or two of the major issues facing the country today.
I think all of us are frustrated. Were frustrated with Washington and were fed up with politicians who say one thing and do another, Mr. Cruz said at a Concerned Veterans for America town hall in New Hampshire. Weve seen that over and over and over again we always see, every cycle, what I call campaign conservatives people who on the campaign suddenly become the most conservative person youve ever seen.
You notice on that debate stage in Cleveland not a single person stood up there and said, Im an establishment moderate squish. I stand for nothing, he said. They dont say that. Every person there claims to be a conservative.
I think as voters and citizens, the test we should apply Scripture tells us you shall know them by their fruits, he said. We need to ask not what are you saying on the campaign trail but have you walked the walk? Have you been a consistent conservative, the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow?
He suggested picking the 10 or 12 biggest issues, challenges, or fights facing the country and asking every candidate on the stage how they have meaningfully led on the issue.
So if you say you oppose Obamacare, great when have you stood up and led the fight to stop it? said Mr. Cruz, who held the Senate floor for more than 21 hours in the fall of 2013 in protest of the law.

Mr. Cruz appears to be the most trustworthy conservative candidate so far.
I guess it depends on the definition of amnesty. Cruz has his own, unique definition. Cruz Tries to Claim the Middle Ground on Immigration
Immigration-reform legislation from the Senates so-called Gang of Eight passed that chamber in June and includes a 13-year path to citizenship. Mr. Cruz pushed unsuccessfully for amendments that would have, among other things, eliminated the citizenship component.
Asked about what to do with the people here illegally, however, he stressed that he had never tried to undo the goal of allowing them to stay.
The amendment that I introduced removed the path to citizenship, but it did not change the underlying work permit from the Gang of Eight, he said during a recent visit to El Paso. Mr. Cruz also noted that he had not called for deportation or, as Mitt Romney famously advocated, self-deportation.
Mr. Cruz said recent polling indicated that people outside Washington support some reform, including legal status without citizenship. He said he was against naturalization because it rewarded lawbreakers and was unfair to legal immigrants. It also perpetuates illegal crossings, he added.
Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000. He also wants to eliminate the per-country limit that he said left applicants from countries like Mexico, China and India hamstrung when they tried to gain legal entry to this country.
He’ll make a great VP. Or president if trump stumbles along the way.
While I think Cruz does make a point, if you think about it, that point is somewhat flawed.
Who is the person who should have led out? That would be someone serving in the White House, Senate, or House.
It wouldn’t be a member of the public sector. And if that member of the public sector got so darned tired of watching the politicians take a pass on fixing things that he entered the political field himself, who should blame him?
Sorry Senator Cruz. Someone has entered the game from the outside. Don’t hyperventilate now.
We expected tangible change when we sent you folks back there. Not seeing any, others have had to take up the cause.
You folks need to remember this.
Right you are, DoughtyOne!
Must really pain you knowing that Saint Donald got on his knees for the Hispanic chamber of commerce today.
Cruz is playing in shades of gray..., and he knows it.
I have no problem with him meeting any Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic or otherwise. As long as his position paper on immigration remains intact, Trump can meet with anyone.
There are a couple of land mines out there for Trump. One is if he backs down on immigration. He must remain crystal clear on that subject.
The others will come as he fleshes out his program on other subjects. He may try to delay doing that until his only serious rivals have been put away.
He has refused to flatly promise to de-fund Planned Parenthood, he keeps saying he is stronger on Women's Issues than Bush... what exactly does he mean by that? He never says. Its a throwaway comment that he has never been asked to clarify as far as I know.
Cruz has been clear that he will roll back every one of Obama's decrees. Trump has hinted in that direction but I don't think he has ever been so clear as Cruz on that subject.
The only two people in the race I pay attention to are Cruz and Trump. Cruz I absolutely trust. Trump has all the right enemies but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Cruz is openly Christian and an open constitutionalist. He has clear principles that guide him. Trump is a populist and a nationalist. His principles are a lot mushier once you get away from immigration and trade.
Smart move by Trump. He’ll go up another % or two, for doing so.
No knees, just staying ahead of the curve.
Must pain you to have to lower yourself to such vulgar terms, towards Trump, all of the time :(
Sorry that your guy - my Sen Cruz - isn’t polling higher. No need to be ugly about it, though.
The temptation to compromise on immigration will be powerful.

Ted Cruz is my pick and I’ll write him in if I have to.
While I am enjoying the mischief of the Donald towards the GOPe, I do not support Trump because Donald is the "lessor evil". How many times will we be sold that bill of goods. instead of the lessor evil I will vote for the greatest conservative. We are told Trump has name recognition with the uninformed so he is "the one who can win" and we have been fooled too many times by the same rhetoric. It is what got us McConnell and Boehner the surrender twins, not to mention Dole the flaccid, Mittens the liberal, both Bushes the Regan revolution killers and McCain the double agent.
I regret to read that on this forum many are hopping on the Donald band wagon simply because he is ahead not for what he will do, as if that mattered.
