It seemed like a good idea at the time -- Hillary Clinton's decision to leave the U.S. Senate in 2009 and accept President Obama's offer to become secretary of state.
The new president, basking in his historic victory, showed magnanimity in appointing a presidential rival to his Cabinet, the way Abraham Lincoln did in 1860 when he named three rivals to his Cabinet.
It was said that Team of Rivals, Doris Kearns Goodwin's 2005 prize winning book about Lincoln's Cabinet, was high on Obama's reading list. And Obama did not mind being compared to Lincoln, at least in his own mind
