The two servicemembers killed in southern Afghanistan Wednesday by a shooter in an Afghan uniform were Air Force special operations troops, the Pentagon said Thursday.
Capt. Matthew D. Roland, 27, and Staff Sgt. Forrest B. Sibley, 31, were shot and killed Wednesday by a lone gunman dressed in an Afghan uniform. He opened fire on their vehicle near Camp Antonlik, in Helmand province, the Pentagon said in a news release.
Military officials initially reported that two gunmen carried out the attack and that both had been killed in the ensuing firefight.
But on Thursday, coalition officials said the shooter and another individual dressed as a member of the Afghan security forces were wounded after coalition troops returned fire.
It was unclear, coalition officials said, whether the killings were the result of a so-called insider attack or possibly an accidental shooting by Afghan forces.
Roland, from Lexington, Ky., was attached to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla. Sibley, from Pensacola, Fla., was part of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron, based at Pope Army Airfield in North Carolina, the Pentagon statement said.
Both squadrons are part of the Air Force Special Operations Command.

Why is no one considering replacing our national leadership and then seeking total military victory in both AFG and IRQ . Instead of slinking off , licking our wounds , like we did after Vietnam . Thus giving radical Islam the great propaganda victory they desperately seek and will absolutely use against us . Our main issue is LEADERSHIP ( on the presidential level ) not where we are fighting or what the causes are . I say our military should be ramped up and unleashed . WITHOUT stupid ROE’s . It’s time for America to teach radical Islam a lesson , to really crush them utterly . Not to surrender to them in defeat . It starts with the removal of Obama as C&C .
