Study delivers bleak verdict on validity of psychology experiment results
The Guardian ^ | AUGUST 27, 2015 | By Ian Sample

A major investigation into scores of claims made in psychology research journals has delivered a bleak verdict on the state of the science.

An international team of experts repeated 100 experiments published in top psychology journals and found that they could reproduce only 36% of original findings.

The study, which saw 270 scientists repeat experiments on five continents, was launched by psychologists in the US in response to rising concerns over the reliability of psychology research.

“There is no doubt that I would have loved for the effects to be more reproducible,” said Brian Nosek, a professor of psychology who led the study at the University of Virgina. “I am disappointed, in the sense that I think we can do better.”

“The key caution that an average reader should take away is any one study is not going to be the last word,” he added. “Science is a process of uncertainty reduction, and no one study is almost ever a definitive result on its own.”

Psychotherapy, in my opinion, succeeds best when the practitioner relies on experience and intuition more than the scientific literature and method. In my experiences with the mental health industry I've met too many therapists and counselors who lack the emotional and spiritual tools to promote healing. I'm talking about a gift rather than a learned skill. Of course, knowing the science and medicine is also essential.

36%, that's probably way more than you'd get if you tried to reproduce Education findings. So don't feel bad psychologists. There is at least one discipline out there weaker than yours.

This article, originally posted yesterday, is about psychology not psychotherapy, two vastly different fields.

Yesterday it was 39 studies out of 100 attempts that were replicated - 39%

The psychiatrist that came up with multiple personalities and his patient that started the whole concept made the whole thing up. After it was exposed, the courts continue to use it for not guilty pleas.

From experience, the therapists are more messed up than the patient.

Psychologists for the most part are LIB “progressives”, homos and social degenerates who don’t know their a** from a hole in the ground. BS = Bull S***, MS = More S*** & PhD = Piled Higher and Deeper.

Funny how I can take a chemistry paper published six months, a year, ten years, even fifty years ago, go in the lab and reproduce the results exactly.

Of course, I've been saying the psychology isn't really a science for quite some time now.

Psychology was my first choice as a major when I was a freshman in college. But two semesters was all it took to make me realize what a load of crap it is. Fled to mathematics and never looked back. Any rational person who’s studied it knows psychology is a farce. It shouldn’t be taught at the university level. Same with sociology.

Regarding replicating physical science vs bio - sciences -
We biological creatures operate by way of wetware that governs trillions of cells, billions of neurons, with millions of biological operational processes.
Psychiatry is not nonsense.
It’s an attempt to understand and hopefully optimize behavior.
I personally know a very respected psychiatrist back east that helps our wounded veterans to readjust to civilian life, thru Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and it works.
Otherwise vets get addicted to medication to cope.

Me too, ever since I had to take a course in it, same for "cultural anthropology" and "forensics science". As an undergraduate physics major with a math minor, the utter lack of application of the scientific method or consistent logical framework was shocking.

SO; WHY DOES THIS NOT APPLY TO GLOBAL WARMING/HUMAN CAUSED CLIMATE CHANGE?
Inquiring minds want to know.
