Among the Trumpies
The Weekly Standard ^ | August 26,2015 | BY FRED BARNES

Posted on 08/27/2015 9:17:46 AM PDT by Hojczyk

Here are five things I learned about the Trump constituency:--They view Trump as different from all the other presidential candidates. He’s not just their favorite candidate. Their tie to him is almost mystical. He’s a kind of political savior, someone who says what they think.

--They love the Trump swagger and attitude. Luntz asked what they liked the most, the Trump persona or his policies. Persona got 23 votes, policies six.

--They cut Trump an enormous amount of slack. They are quite forgiving. They were given a list of 21 “negatives” about Trump and asked to pick the seven they thought were legitimate. Around 10 of the group – by my rough count – said they couldn’t come up with seven. The negatives that got the most votes were his previous support for a single-payer health care system, his support for gun control, and his comment that the economy did better under

--The intensity of their feelings about Trump was striking. It was noticeable in how they spoke of him in contrast with their view of members of Congress as “useless.”

--For nearly an hour, Luntz played clips of Trump from TV. The focus groupies were asked to move a dial between zero if turned off by Trump, 100 if thrilled, and 50 if neutral. More often than not they hit 100 or came close. Trump’s tackling a man ringside at a WWF match?

What did I conclude from all this? One thing stood out: Trump has a solid base of support that won’t soon fade away. Those who think otherwise are kidding themselves.

More wasted space when they could be talking issues.

Most people are just fed up with being jerked around by GOP.

McConnell and Boehner are responsible for Trump.

Defeating the uni-party control of the USA is the number one issue.

None of the other issues will be resolved until the crony communists of both parties are sent packing.

Barnes at least has the honesty to admit reality, or close. It’s not just that he won’t be “going away soon,” it is quite likely he will win the GOP nomination early, like shortly after Super Tuesday.

I am too, but I'm not supporting some liberal just to assuage my feelings.

Even though he’s got billions, travels around in a fleet of aircraft, wears custom made suits and diamond cufflinks.....he still talks and acts like the guy next door who’d stroll over to help you paint your garage.

Trump is for single payer and against defunding Planned Parenthood (at least fully defunding it), but a lot of the Trump supporters don’t seem to care what his actual views are.

Trump's appeal:

Every Republican (almost) ever elected recently: Vote for me. I'm a conservative. I will stop Obama. I will repeal Obamacare.

Reality: Gee this is great, I'm getting rich here in Washington. Don't want to upset the apple cart.

Rinse, repeat.

I can’t argue with that. They did this to themselves and now think they can just churn out some hit pieces in the media and they’ll be back in the driver’s seat.

He doesn’t need to talk issues (now that he’s staked his candidacy on immigration).

When he says “We’ll make America great again”....Americans daydream and fill in the blanks w/ THEIR vision of what that means to them.

Well put. And the next generation of conservative leaders need to learn that lesson from Trump.

The problem is that Trump never talks issues. It’s all about him, and the few “issues” he mentions are those for which he has no plan and obviously doesn’t know much about.

Yet the Trump fans are just like the Obama fans, swooning when their guy gets on stage, even though he says nothing, refuses to answer questions, relies on ethnic identity...well, just the basic Obama routine but tuned to a different group.

The problem is that Trump never talks issues.

Not true, the immigration issue was addressed in detail last week.

There's still almost a year of campaigning to go, no need to rush every policy paper out in the first 6 weeks. Even Reagan didn't do that.

It is all in the eyes of the beholder I guess. Candidates never really talk issue details. They should. But then, the media usually focuses on trivia unless that want to nab the candidate. Like what happened when W got 20 questions about foreign policy as a sort of quiz to make him look stupid. Now they hit Trump with “where are your details” when Trump is right at the same phase as every other candidate. Details are in the works.

I like Cruz and Huckabee best becaus ethe social issues matter most to me. But I am not in favor of cheating and scamming my way to victory. Trump has as many details as the rest of the candidates. He is winning because he is a real man in a world of girly men.
