The weeklong event in Nevada draws thousands of people — and their drugs

A new Nevada sheriff tasked with overseeing the upcoming Burning Man festival plans to crack down on the annual desert debauchery.

Jerry Allen, 39, who was elected Pershing County Sheriff in January, said he plans to tighten law enforcement for the tens of thousands of festival-goers journeying to the remote Black Rock Desert next week for the annual event, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported on Tuesday.

WHAT! Drugs at burning man? But, I thought.............. Burners beware. Or pony up some serious cash real quick. They are in town preparing for the journey to Black Rock playa starting Friday. Lots of rental RV's and regular rental moving vans lining up in the bigger parking lots. I actually heard some 'reporter' on the radio the other day call it a music festival. HUH? Don't see any big name act advertised anywhere. I think they're permitted for 70 thousand burners. Enjoy the sand fleas communers.

Might be fun to go once. Yeah, it’s a freak show. But it’s about freedom too.

No more of a freak show than the power trippers in Washington DC is, if you think about it; the difference is, these folks aren’t hurting anyone.

I don’t understand the attraction. Hanging out in the hot desert sun with no shade and a bunch of smelly hippies for a week? AND having to pay for the privilege?

No thanks!

If you go to Burning Man you will see naked people and it will, as usual, not be good naked.

That is what the drugs are for.

Burning Man ain't what it used to be. It used to be kind of a gay rights parade for middle aged heterosexuals. Painting yourself blue and running around nude was ok. Drugs? Yep. The only rule was hurt no one. No gate keepers. No reservations. Now it seems to be a over crowded meeting of the Good Sam Club. I remember it when.

I know more than a few Burners - your observation is all too true.

The Sheriff better start now ordering tens of thousands of pink jump suits, underwear, bologna, bread and erecting tent city jail facilities, he’s going to need them if he is serious.

The sheriff should just leave them alone. They aren’t hurting anyone other than maybe themselves. Let them get it out of their systems and go back to their lives.

After the Waco massacre I’m over sensitive to police overreach. If this is the way some people like to celebrate freedom then why should anyone stop them. It’s not like they are in downtown San Francisco riding around naked on bicycles or something in front of families with children on vacation.

“..Painting yourself blue and running around nude was ok.....”

I did that once... it didn’t turn out well.

The purple paint job with the white Rally Stripe wasn’t too bad though...
