ESPN's Uncomfortable, Unnerving Relationship With The NFL
Forbes ^ | Aug 25, 2015 | Maury Brown

Maybe it’s all just a coincidence. Stranger things have happened. Given enough time and enough events, things just happen to align. After all, Walt Disney DIS +2.60%-owned ESPN is the biggest sports outlet, and the NFL is the most popular sport in America. Given enough news and enough stories, could ESPN simply appear to be favoring the NFL with biased stories, peddling misinformation, and making moves to protect the NFL?

I’m not the first to whisper these words. And, given the amount of money that ESPN pays the NFL to air games, well, every story that favors the NFL as the league continues to be mired in controversy begs the question, is ESPN afraid to not only bite the hand that feeds, but is also pandering to them?

ESPN's relationship with the NFL:

NFL says report this, ESPN complies.

NFL says jump, ESPN says how high.

NFL says bend over bitch, ESPN says yes sir.

ESPN has poor sports coverage for the most part. But its coverage of the NFL is so pandering, it is particularly bad.

The NFL is the only thing keeping them (ESPN) afloat.

NFL network coverage of games is horrendous.

ESPN doesn’t really cover sports. More accurate is that ESPN provides coverage of ESPN covering sports.

I don’t get it. Most NFL games are transmitted via CBS, NBC, with some on ABC. Then there’s the NFL network for preseason and replays. ESPN has very little. What am I missing?

Agree the NFL network does a WAY better job in their analysis and coverage than ESPN.

Then why does the NFL allow ESPN to try to social engineer football out of existence?

You can’t be an objective sports journalist covering a league when your employer relies on that same league to produce 60%+ of their revenue.

Like being a consumer reporter at a TV station that relies on car dealer advertising. Reporting on lemons? Fugheddaboudit!

ESPN is to sports what Geraldo Rivera is to investigative journalism.

It’s important to understand that ESPN is 4 24/7 networks. Depending on which parts of it you watch different stories go different ways. Yes their “legal analyst” thinks the league is going to win the deflategate case. But he’s the only person paid by ESPN I’ve seen take that position, most state ON ESPN that they think the league is wrong and will lose. There’s a lot of sections of ESPN that are strongly critical of the NFL, Dan le Batard’s dad (a Cuban refugee who hosts Dan’s show) calls Goodell “Fidel Goodell” every time he can find an excuse to mention him.

The MNF contract is the priciest of all the NFL contracts. Plus of course with the NFL’s following it’s the only sport that gets solid coverage all year. ESPN’s shows that analyze the NFL never go on hiatus, because they always have an audience.
