A fighter jet smashed into cars on busy road in front of thousands of horrified spectators at Shoreham Airshow

At least 11 died, 14 were injured and the pilot, Andy Hill, has been left fighting for his life in a critical condition

Family of gym instructor Matt Jones, 24, said they were 'devastated' after hearing he died in jet crash on A27

Worthing United FC goalkeeper Matt Grimstone and midfielder Jacob Schilt, 23, were also killed in the smash

The devastated families and friends of two footballers and a gym instructor who died in the Shoreham Airshow disaster have paid tribute to their loved ones as police announced that at least 11 people were killed in the crash.

Goalkeeper Matt Grimstone, 23, and midfielder Jacob Schilt, 23, were on their way to play for non-league Worthing United FC against Loxwood when they were killed on the A27 in West Sussex yesterday.

Relatives of personal trainer Matt Jones, 24, from Littlehampton revealed that he was on his way home from work with a friend when the Hunter Hawker fighter jet, piloted by Andy Hill, smashed into his BMW 3 Series Coupe in a ball of flames.

His mother Hazel described Mr Jones as an 'absolute diamond' as it emerged that the pilot, who flies for British Airways, is fighting for his life in a critical condition.

Mr Grimstone's parents, Sue and Phil, and his two brothers, David and Paul, from Brighton paid an emotional tribute to the footballer, saying he was the 'kindest person you could ever meet with a great wit'.

They said: 'The family are in total shock at losing our dearest son Matthew. He has been taken from us at just 23

The air show business seems especially hazardous this summer. There is report today of two planes colliding at a Swedish air show. And a helicopter crashed at a Russia show and I think there were one or two others crashes at air shows this year.

2 planes collide at Swiss airshow, at least 1 killed

Rough year for air shows.

Omg - that yellow car is engulfed in flames.

It looks like the people standing there haven’t even had time to react

I think that was the 2 soccer players that died. It looks like their windows were down. If the windows were up maybe they would have survived?

Of all places to crash, fields all around, the pilot smashed into a busy highway. Sad day.

All those open fields around the crash site and this guy crashes into a packed highway. A spot of really bad luck.

Of all places to crash, fields all around, the pilot smashed into a busy highway. Sad day.

The pilot was lined up with the runway finishing a loop but was too low. The video shows his downward inertia took him to ground impact. Even with all the open fields, the nature of the maneuver would not have him lined up anywhere else but show center.

I wonder how close the roadway was to the runway threshold? Most major cities have freeways or major roadways right at the end of runways.

For a real thrill, try I-5 off of San Diego's Lindbergh Field. You can count the rivets on the planes as they fly over the freeway. Lambert Field at St Louis is another place for up close and personal plane spotting.

It looks like the road is about 400 ft from the end of two runways.

I believe the cones and road signs were up to control traffic entering the airshow. The only entrance to the airport is about 200 ft along the road from the crash site.

I google mapped the airport and he was lining up on runway 20. The road where he impacted was just outside the perimeter and you probably have the 400 ft estimate about right for the landing threshold.

He did a very curious correction a slight aileron roll to the left just before impact.

This is purely speculation but it looks to me as if he may have had a grayout coming through the loop and the correction was a sign he was regaining full consciousness and beginning to react to the situation.
