The Democratic Party is bleeding California and they're rapidly running out of other people's money. So that means more taxes. More and more taxes.
Governor Brown, for his part, has left the door open. His approach has changed since his previous term, when he promised to give voters the final say on tax proposals even though their assent is not required by law.
"Everything is on the table," said Deborah Hoffman, a spokeswoman for Brown.
Everything except cutting taxes and spending obviously.
The Capitol's ruling Democrats want to hit up residents and businesses for billions of dollars as they seek new ways to fund public healthcare, subsidize construction of affordable housing and pay for road repairs.
2 out of 3 of those are goodies for the Welfare Class. But that's the Democratic Party's base these days.
Proposals on the table include an extra $2 per pack on cigarettes, to increase payments to doctors who serve poor patients; an expanded tax on health insurers to help fund assistance for the elderly and disabled; and a new fee on real estate transactions to finance homes for low-income Californians.
The first is a boon to cigarette smugglers and will, predictably not cover the costs, the second means raising the already high cost of health insurance, and the final one, apparently real estate is too affordable so we've got to tax it some more so more people can't afford it. It's the glorious welfare state in action.
Also possible are taxes and fees that Democrats say are needed to fill potholes around the state. Options include a new fee for owners of electric cars, a higher tax on gasoline and steeper charges for registering vehicles.
Or a tax on any public official or planner who uses the words "Light rail". I bet that would raise a lot of money fast.
Lawmakers will also grapple with a tax on health insurance plans that accept Medi-Cal patients. The Obama administration has said the levy needs to be revamped or the state could lose up to $1 billion in federal
To comply with federal standards, the tax would need to be assessed on all health plans, even those without Medi-Cal patients. The costs would probably be passed onto consumers.
"Probably". Because you know how businesses like to eat taxes and not pass them along to consumers.

Strike out the word “California”. Replace it with the word “All”.
Now you are 100% accurate.

No new California taxes on guns and ammunition?

Nah. Just raise taxes on rich actors and musicians. They want to be taxed more.

Note carefully what is happening to the “artistic” cadre in California. They are fleeing to Canada.
Years ago the “Golden State” was referred to as “Can’t-Afford-Ya”, and it has only gotten more true all the time.

I was born in and have loved this state for all of my nearly 75 years. That said, it has virtually no future so long as the RATs run the show. I have always hoped that California would truly go bust financially. It would spread misery far and wide, but that will be necessary before any serious thoughts about “rebuilding” are considered. The sad part of it is that the farther they kick the financial can down the road before the collapse occurs, the worse it’s going to be when the SHTF!

no, Kalifornicate doesn't want to have to rely on those kinds of taxes because the eventual goal of the communist criminal democrats running the state is to outlaw both.

They got a fever....just give them more cowbell and tell them to kiss my a$$.

To be fair, California needs the money to pay for those security officers at every state border just in case you have an illegal apple in your lunch cooler.
Illegal apples are inherently more costly than illegal aliens. /s
A statewide tax to fix potholes. I cannot believe these people. There’s probably over 30 different existing taxes to cover fixing a pothole.

Ditto that; I am also a native Californian, I love my state but HATE the politicians.
I have noticed that for the last few years more and more of them have wetback sur names.

There has never been a Dem pol, to my knowledge, after JFK who was for less taxes. The name of the Dem Party should actually be either the TaxUMore Party or the more appropriate Thief Party.
MORE..MORE.MOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! taxes is their constant chant for their ever increasing list of worthless programs to inflict on the general public.

What year was the turning point? What year did the state make the fatal choice to turn Dem and send the state tumbling head first into the socialist La Brea tar pits?

My best guess was right after Reagan left office and the GOPe here got guys like Dukmejian and Wilson elected. Arnold got in on “star power,” and the only thing he was successful at while in office was knocking up his maid. We have managed to keep “white guys” in the governor’s mansion though. The only Mexican we’ve ever elected was Cruz Bustamante ( aka MECHA Boy) as Lt. Governor.

The approximate time California started its slide - about the time the “flower children” began to vote in sizable numbers. California was still pretty decent in the late 1970’s, but with the departure of Ronaldus Magnus for the White House, the last of the barriers were falling, and “love” (as exemplified by the Manson Family) became the “New Way”.
Doors were opened that proved impossible to close again.
