I watched the whole video. He makes a very good stump speech and clearly had the audience well engaged. His point about the free market working well when you have smart leaders who make good trade agreements was very on target. Anyone who thinks other countries don’t try to use trade to their advantage should reconsider. A free market is an adversarial field where everyone tries to win. The question is who are the players. If on the one hand you have multinational corporations playing and on the other hand you have countries playing then where does that leave the U.S. as a country? When you have a political class that’s been corrupted by money interests then the socialized risk / privatized reward model takes hold. Great for those on the receiving end of the rewards, but not so much for the taxpayer who’s left holding the bag when the bailouts are pleaded for.
Trump is very much setting himself up as a Teddy Roosevelt style Republican. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but so far he’s striking some very deep chords in the electorate.
The winners in the market economy are the players who are free from government interference. I don’t agree with needing “smart government” people for the market economy (need them only for legitimate government activity), because by definition the free market is FREE from government interference and it is the free market that is the robust engine that produces wealth as it did in America in the 1800’s before government began it’s insidious and unconstitutional meddling.
