Talladega Mayor Larry Barton says he does not know why he was targeted when he was beaten with a baseball bat Saturday, but a former lawyer for the assailant said it started with a sex tape.
Here is the story Barton tells:
"I pulled up to the barbershop and there was a guy in a hood and trench coat standing there," he said. "I opened the door and he started pounding me with a baseball bat."
Barton, 74, said 71-year-old Benny Green -- who used to co-host Barton's radio show "In the Interest of the People" – hit him repeatedly as he tried to get out of the car.
"He told me he had to kill me," Barton said from his UAB hospital room, where he is being treated for injuries to his head, face, eye and jaw, which he says are "not life threatening."
He saved himself, he says, because he was able to kick his assailant in the groin from the driver's seat of the car.
""I was able to kick him twice – hard," he said. "He fell on the ground."
Barton says he has no idea why Green attacked him.
"We've never had a harsh word," he said. "I just don't know."
Barton said the Greens may have been having marital problems, but he denied any involvement in that trouble.
However, the Greens are currently in the process of a divorce. And Green's former divorce lawyer, Steward Springer, said he understands why Green has reason to beat Barton "as Barton was caught on hidden video having sex with Green's wife."
Barton -- asked directly -- said he was not involved with Green's wife.
